it was freezing cold with the brutal wind but there were still a few people taking in the scenic niagara. from canada, this is the view of the american side of the falls. the much prettier part of the falls, the horseshoe-shaped falls and the more powerful one, is obscured by a heavy mist that translates to icy sidewalks and roads. this part of the falls is quite far from the main falls. i did not make any attempt at photographing it as it was really cold and i didn't want mist-turned-ice on my camera.
the structure in the near middle is used as a kiosk for the tourism personnel during the more decent months in the spring or summer. i kind of like seeing the falls through the kiosk.
That is a neat perspective of the falls through the kiosk. I don't blame you for wanting to take care of your camera. I would like to see this myself in decent weather. Thanks for sharing.
i have been at this spot!!!!! I remember it so well! And I prefer the American side of the falls -- so much more photogenic! Ah, so lovely to see this! What -- no mist on the camera day? (good idea!) Go have a hot cup of cocoa and get warm!
@pamfromcalgary - thank you, pam. indeed i have to take good care of my camera as my p&s and i would have to be together for a long time before i could graduate to a DSLR. :-)
I saw that- we took a cab from Jamestown to Niagra Falls on a cold, snowy December evening. We couldnt go to Canadian side because the cabby didnt have her license with- or so she said. Went to Hard Rock and back to Jamestown. Quick dark visit.
Interesting shot- I like seeing the water through the kiosk. I think you could crop out the tall buildings on the left and it'd make the falls behind the kiosk even more noticeable. In my mind they're vying for attention right now. But that's just me. How far are you from Niagra? When I'm visiting my son in Batavia, it's about an hour away. If you're not too far, maybe we could meet up some time! Which reminds me, I think I have to renew my passport! Nice shot.
That kiosk makes a beautiful frame . . this is a fantastic catch, summerfield. I can imagine how cold that water is there. But awesome views, and one can't help but appreciate that beauty . . cold or not.
@catsmeowb - thank you, camille. it wasn't so bad as the night before, although the wind really made it more miserable.
@olivetreeann - i tried it, only a portion of the tree was left though. but do you mean the building left of the tree or the building jutting out of the trees right behind? but you're right, ann, it did change the perspective which had shifted more to the kiosk's windows. quite interesting. i'd post the 'ann' version soon. :-) thank you, ann.
@olivetreeann - sorry, forgot to address the question. toronto is about an hour (give or take) drive to niagara, without the tourist-y traffic. sure, next time you're in batavia, let me know. although i prefer to drive around there when there is no longer the possibility of snow, or i can still have my 'lifetime' driver drive me over.
@karenann - thank you, karenann. i've seen the falls in all seasons over the years. i prefer the wintry view, especially when ice slabs are formed. but yes, the cold could be a nuisance.
@summerfield Yes- the one behind the tree which leaves just a hint of the tree in your picture, but removes the distraction- like I said though- that's just my opinion!
Nice shot - I've never seen the falls from this side! I still want to visit the falls during the winter - must be pretty seeing it all lit up at night.
@summerfield - that is me up to date with your album :-) you have not commented on everything on mine...but no rush (unless you are quitting when you hit your 365?!). The last couple of pics in November I am quite proud of...but before that there are quite a few shots taken on a wee road trip to the north west of Scotland. and then there are some not-bad rock-n-roll shots around 9 -`13 December :-)
@shellbelle - thank you, michelle.
@sarasdadandmom - thank you, terry.
@cscecil - have you? that's great! thank you, CS.
@roth - thank you, sue. it's always a different view everytime you go there.
@jannkc - thank you, jann. that's too bad. your side of the falls look nice at night!
@okeanos - so, go then. :-)
