today was a real scorcher. apparently we reached 37 degrees celcius. at the food court, there was free ice cream. and i was so hot, i didn't care if i was going to get sick, i just ate the ice cream. i suffered for about an hour when i got home.
in any case, in my sojourn at the underground mall, there was a store that sold costume jewelry and other feminine stuff. and hats. they were on sale at 30% off and i fell in love with this lovely wide-brimmed hat and paid $8 for it. i wore it at lunch when i walked outside to go back to my building and tonight when i got caught in the rain coming home. good thing i put the hat in a large plastic bag. :-)
my love affair with hats started when i lived in muscat, sultanate of oman. the queen was visiting and i had to accompany my boss and his wife to the reception (my boss was british). i chose to wear a wide brimmed silk hat with a large flower. i looked silly. i was wearing a sleeveless dress and a pair of white wrist knitted gloves, you'd think i was a society girl. and boy, did my boss insist that i learn how to properly curtsy and had to send me to an old british woman at the ministry of petroleum who was employed specifically so everyone who was invited at the reception could learn how to curtsy properly.
after that, i would always wear hats at events, even at a croquet tournament. when i came to Canada, i had berets, a pillbox hat, a cloche hat. then one fall day we were crossing the street and my beret was blown away. my nephew who was about 5 at the time, ran after it before we could stop him and almost got hit by a car. from then on, i stopped wearing hats and i gave them away. now i want them again.
Love the hat and pearls. Wonderful story and I am so glad you bought another hat. To have your nephew chase after your beret would have been frightful for sure.
I love hats too- wore them all the time when my boys were little. My grandmother was a hat lover too (mom's step mom). She had over 80 hats when we cleared out her house. I did keep some and still have them. Might be time to look at them again... I just love this shot because it's so elegant and I love that hat!!
Tres' chic!! Love this hat ... bet that you look great! What a lovely composition and pov. I feel like I should go out now and buy some new clothes. Khakis and tee shirts (black or white!) That's my wardrobe. But you got to curtsy for the queen. Wow! What a life you've lived! Scary story about your nephew ... enjoy the hat now. I know that it's YOU.
@pamfromcalgary - thank you, pam. i bought another one today so i don't have to carry the other one back to the office. this one will stay here at my desk so when i walk around at lunch time, i have a hat handy.
@sarasdadandmom - if we all wear hats, how are you going to see those purple, green or even aqua-blue coloured hair that a lot of women nowadays have? :-) thank you, terry.
@catsmeowb - thank you, camille. you're so sweet. i've started looking for my old pics, especially the one where i looked like a silly goose wearing the dress when i met the queen. the dress i know i gave away but i know i have two or three pics in that dress.
@summerfield oh, i so hope you find photos of that. i am very sure you did not look like a goose at all, never ever. perhaps a bit overdressed. who has NOT done that? and to meet the Queen????? well, you can be excused, surely. i would really like to see those gloves, too!
