this week, my get pushed partner, the lovely victoria stowe, challenged me to "photograph fire".
i made banana flambé so i can photograph fire. the candle flames are like domesticated pets, subtle and submissive. but this one's an entirely different beast! also i put in more than the required two tablespoons of brandy; methinks i put about half of the 1/3 cup. :-) then i threw in the lit matchstick. the sound of bursting flame/fire makes me nervous. so even though i had practiced where i should stand for the shot, i still was in a bit of panic. not concerned that the fire would be too much for the bananas, nor that the fire alarm would go off, i was more concerned i might have been too near the fire and might burn my camera. (okay, i just checked it, it's cool! it's okay!) i was happy with the five shots. then i remembered my ISO was too high at 800 so poured more brandy and re-ignited the bananas and set ISO to 100. well, duh! shots were blurry as hell except for one. so i'm using the first shot here.
what happened to the banana flambé, you ask terry?
i ate them of course! i think i'll be absent tomorrow; i'm going to have a bad hangover. thank heavens my meds were finished last night.
@vstowe - thank you, victoria. i might do more if we get to that restaurant i'm thinking about, just have to make sure we get the seat right next to the fireplace. :-)
@bkbinthecity - hahaha! the secret, now i have confirmed, is to put just a little bit of brandy. of course, i put more than i should and i was using a small pan. a larger/wider pan would have probably a lower flame and bluer at the bottom. in here, i just captured a bit of blue. thank you, brian.
@jackie8 - of course you'd have to eat the bananas. brown them first in a small amount of butter and then put a little bit of brown sugar or maple or corn syrup. then pour your brandy and ignite it, just make sure you're reasonably away so that the burst of flame won't get your eyebrows :-) shoot it and after the flame has died down, you can eat the banana flambe. eat with a scoop of french vanille ice cream.
@sunnygreenwood - thank you, anne.
