Beaver Island, in the 1800s through the early 1900s was a major fishing headquarters in Lake Michigan. It also served as a main port for steamers who stocked up on wood for their wood-burning engines. The island remains 2/3 state forests. The harbor is a natural deep one (with hopes that the falling lake levels don't disastrously reduce the depth). Today after I played golf, I drove along the harbor and stopped to take photos of the boats in the harbor (before the season starts, so these were all working craft). Among images of the ferry, tug, decommissioned boats, and small craft, this was my favorite.
But it was a very hard decision about what to post because tonite, I successfully captured the flare of the sun during the sunset and really debated posting that instead. Just in case you might be interested (translation: I hope you have time to look!), here's the link: http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-06-06
Very cool boat! Was this a composite or did you process it to get the color range? It has a little 'unnatural' feel to me, but it's such a great composition.
@archaeofrog I used detail extractor in color FedEx pro to get the clouds up as it was otherwise washed out looking. That's causing the feeling of painted or processed. I took the photo during the wrong time of day for decent lighting but rarely make a special trip into town because of dusty roads and cost of gas here.
Wonderful composition, Taffy. I like your POV and how you included the foreground dock. Beautiful processing, too. Did you use Nik HDR Efex? I am demoing that suite and really enjoying it. Haven't tried the HDR yet though.
@pflaume Thanks Lisa. I value your feedback. I used Nik Color Efex Pro I think. I've just started playing around with the Nik HDR program and since we've been on the island, I've used it only with a single shot, rather than with bracketing. I'm 99% sure I didn't use HDR because when I do, it automatically adds HDR to the name when it saves (e.g., DSCN1044_HDR). And I just checked the filename and it doesn't have HDR in it. So, I suspect I used detail extractor and polarization from Color Efex, or just detail extractor. And I edited it in Aperture initially because I'd overexposed it (I was using my P&S and it tends to do that). I hope this helps. I do like the HDR on some images, but mostly I use Color efex or Silver efex.
@taffy Thank you for the detailed reply! It's really helpful. I have been having fun experimenting with the Nik software. It's nice to know that this look can be achieved in Color Efex.
Thank you all so much for your kind comments and your support, and to those who fav'd it -- thank you very very very much! I am enjoying viewing and commenting on your photos. @archaeofrog Typo in my response to you earlier -- it isn't fedex, it's Efex Pro by Nik suites. Autocorrect struck again!
@rachelwithey@ness50@jo13@darylo Thank you for your kind and supportive comments! And Daryl -- so funny for you to say that as I was thinking of your comment when I imagined the shot I wanted and where to position the boat to get the right amount of sky!
@kimshots Thanks Kim! @pandora Thanks Susan! @kazlamont Thanks Kazzy -- I always hope if we don't have a beautiful day, at least we might have clouds! @boxplayer THanks so much BP! @colie Thank you Colie -- and for the fav! @sjouk Thanks Sjouk!
@danielwsc Thank you so much Daniel, for going through my album! Your comments always mean a lot to me, and your favs are very special! I hope you're both having a great summer so far. And that the storm that is making national news doesn't create any problems for you.
Isn't it a shame you can only "fav" a picture once?!?!?!? I love everything about your image... You have two interesting points of focus, yet the sky would not be outdone by either one. Phenomenal photo!
