After a morning of rain and despite hot and humid sticky weather, my friend and I decided to do a quick trip to Miller's Marsh to see if we could find some snakes to photograph. They like hanging out under wood planks so 'we' (meaning Vickey) carefully lifted a board to see if a snake was there and I had my camera ready to try to capture it before it slithered off. We checked about 20 boards and got lucky twice. My goal was to capture one with its tongue sticking out. It was great fun, despite the heat, bugs, and losing our way (which is quite hard to do on such a small island!).

Fantastic capture, well done! ohh u are brave, I'd run mile. Snakes in Aus are so poisonous, we have an arrangement that we stay clear of each other lol.
@jetpics Thanks Janette! We have no need to fear on Beaver Island as none of them are poisonous. I'd run in Australia as well!! I've gotten braver through this project, I've found, but not crazy enough if it were a dangerous one.
His body is never-ending...spiraling around and around. Are you not afraid you'll find a poisonous one and he'll bite you? That would scare the bleep out of me! Great shot! Glad you did not "leave a board unturned."
Wonderful capture! Great timing getting the tongue! Even if the snakes are not poisonous you would not catch me out hunting them! Fav for your bravery!
I am very impressed that you went looking for snakes. We don't have them here in NZ so I have no reason to be as freaked out by them as I am., When I travel my biggest fear is seeing a snake in the wild. I've seen them in pet shops and cages and even touched them but they terrify more than any other living creature! Great shot!
There is no way I would go looking for ANY kind of snake!! I did photograph one for 365 because it was in the middle of the road a friend and I were walking and I had my camera. But she kept asking, "Are you sure you're going to get a close enough picture back there?" as I stood 100 feet away! lol I'd love to say great shot- but I really don't like snakes!! So I had to scroll down immediately!
@kazlamont Aw Kazzy...I think of you as being adventurous so I'm surprised! And I'm a total wimp about these things...so if I could capture this, I'm guessing anyone could!
@sailingmusic@bobfoto Thanks for the fav Myrna! It was much more fun than I thought it would be. And thanks Jason -- I took a bunch of shots in a row in hopes that one would catch the tongue out and it did.
@taffy - The snake I was trying to shoot was an Amethystine Python and measured 2.4metres (7.9feet) long... His tongue only came out on occasion, normally after I moved... when I sat still with the camera focused, the snake just sat still too.
Excellent bit of nature stalking and capturing - so lucky to be able to go out and just find snakes - I absolutely love snakes - but our two main species are very shy and relatively endangered.
Fabulous shot though and I love its little tongue :)
Thank you all for your wonderful comments on my snake photo, as well as thinking of me as being brave! I'm truly a wimp about things but snakes on the island are not poisonous and up close, they really are beautiful creatures. Now, if it were a mouse, you'd NEVER see me photographing or within a mile of it!!
