Thank you all for your wonderful comments and favs which sent my photo of the seal pond to PP today. It was a great start to my birthday today!
Day to Remember:
1. Brunch with MariAnne while Jim deals with refrigerator replacement (went out yesterday and must replace before we leave town)
2. Haircut
3. Run a few errands and take daytime photographs of city in snow
4. Grade Papers
5. Go to party at P's and E's home
6. After party, Jim drives me to Museum Campus to take photos at night as part of my birthday present
7. Main b'day present (this is a 'big' birthday): Jim's gave me the photo trip to Japan this summer (June) that Junko @jyokota and Michael @vankrey are leading! [ http://365project.org/discuss/general/19837/photo-trip-to-japan-join-us]
This was a very good birthday! Above shot is of the Field Museum on Chicago's museum campus, at night, combined 4 shots varying from 1.3 - 8 seconds at f13.

Aw, I missed your birthday by a couple of hours I think. :( I love how I can READ the banners. This is stunningly favulous and happy birthday. I'm quite the jealous gal -- that present is delightful (all of them really, but the Japan trip. Jim is a gem).
Happy Birthday!!! I celebrated this month too! Such a great shot and what a great birthday gift! Love it when someone really knows your passion and gives you something that will make your heart sing!!

A very happy birthday Taffy! Sounds like the perfect day! That trip to Japan sounds fabulous what a brilliant present from Jim! And to finish your day taking you out for these night shots - wow how lucky you are to have such a generous and supportive husband! This is a wonderful capture with such great detail! Fav!
Happy Birthday! This is one of my most favorite places to visit when I'm in Chicago. I never tire of visiting the Field Museum, always so much to absorb while browsing the different cultures. Love the live performances also held at the Field. This is a beautiful night capture.
Stunning shot, great, grand ,stately building (I was there!!!!) more so in this special lighting.
Happy birthday, Taffy! That was a really special B-day, indeed. You were spoilt....The trip to Japan!!!!! Junko proposed it to me but I had already booked a trip to Canada for that period....it'd have been so nice to do it together...However, do let me know if you plan something similar in the future....I'd love to do a photo tour with you all!
Gorgeous shot! And Happy Birthday, Taffy! Sounds like a great day and I'm thrilled about your trip to Japan! I'll be celebrating my birthday in about five days -- hoping my bday present is photo-related. Wish me luck!
Just love the golden warm of the light and and what a wonderful building!
Happy Birthday Taffy and what a fantastic present - bet you can't wait! : )
fav
Beautiful shot ! What a wonderful building. I Happy Birthday Taffy, I was reading your list and at #6, I was thinking awww, your hubby is so sweet, taking you to the campus for nighttime shots and then I read #7 ! Wow, that is a great present and I know you will have the most awesome time and come back with lots of photos for us to enjoy :)) Fav
@cazann Thanks Caz, for the comments and birthday wishes. Yep, I do feel pretty lucky with Jim. Since it was my 65th, he did do more than we normally do -- trying to make it feel less stressful about aging and more something like I've always thought -- each year gets better. This one was harder than I'd anticipated, though!
Happy Belated Birthday, Taffy! The museum looks gorgeous at night. I went to Chicago's Museum of Natural History when I was in high school. I loved it.
happy 29th birthday (you did say it was a big one, right? ;p)... such a lovely photo - that light is awesome... and your birthday present is uber uber cool... great guy you have there!
Taffy, since you're going to be short on time and traveling, I'll make your push simple. Use the water camera to capture one of your body parts and something alive in the water together....how's that?
@mikegifford Hi Mike -- that sounds like fun to try. If I can't do it this week, I'm sure I can do something the following week as that is when we are on Maui and the snorkeling is great. I know on Oahu, it's likely the only water event is kayaking on Tuesday morning and I don't know what kind of an area it is. So, if you don't mind having it go on unofficially longer than normal, that's good with me!
BTW, as a more experienced photographer and if you have time to respond before tomorrow morning CST in the US, my choice for camera body is: D90 crop sensor which does work or D600 body which no longer will do auto focus -- but it's a full frame and has double the MBs per file. Lenses are the same for both, so the D90 means less wide angle (24-85 is what i'd bring, but I could bring an 18-105DX lens). In the language of 365, WWYD? Trade off file size and full frame or just go with manual focus and not worry about it or other things going wrong.
@taffy Wow..tough trade-off. My gut is when traveling there are a lot to times you need the auto-focus since you just don't have the time or there may be awkward moments when it will be handy. I shot DX for a long time (D70, D200 and D7000) and I have great pictures from them...so for two weeks in a very scenic place Like Hawaii, the D90 with the DX lenses you mention should be fine. Just for kicks throw in the D600 body unless you also need chargers/batteries that are different from the D90 and you don't want to carry the extra stuff. My guess is the D90 is different and this adds a lot of extra stuff and weight. Just my $02...have a great time and I'm okay to carry over to another week if you're pushed for time.
@mikegifford Thanks for the insights Mike. I am leaning that way now...I love the full frame, but think it may not be worth it. Now to switch out the batteries, chargers, etc. that was all organized! And great to know we can carry over -- hopefully it will work out by Sunday -- that's the day we get into Maui. Just have to switch my camera's time zone!
Your man sounds wonderfully supportive Taffy, and I think it's a good idea to use birthdays as a reason/excuse/opportunity to photograph to our hearts' content! Japan sounds like its going to be amazing, can't wait to see your city photos, you do them so well!
Happy Belated Birthday, Taffy!! The Field Museum photo is fabulous! I love how I can read the banners, and the architectural detail on the buildings is so clear. The building positively glows! And how lucky for you the streets were wet. A big FAV!
Wonderful shot and processing! Happy belated birthday! It sounds like it was a great day. How wonderful that you are off to Japan! I am sure it will be an amazing trip.
@pflaume Thanks for the kind wishes Lisa! I appreciate it. Right now we're at LAX on our way to Hawaii for combination work and fun. But I'm so excited to be going with @jyokota in June to Japan -- it was such a great present from Jim as it means I'll be gone on his birthday so I would have felt to guilty to go if he hadn't made it possible. Have a good holiday -- not sure how much I'll be able to comment while we're gone. 13 more days!
@sunraye Thank you so much, Raye! I am still celebrating with friends in Hawaii last week, and now Jim and I are on Maui. For turning 65, this has almost become something I'm happy happened!
Happy birthday, Taffy! That was a really special B-day, indeed. You were spoilt....The trip to Japan!!!!! Wonderful capture, loads of texture
Happy Birthday Taffy and what a fantastic present - bet you can't wait! : )
