Driving down Main Street (the one main street in what was once the fishing village of Beaver Island), I noticed the car in front of me curving around something in the street. I thought it might be ducklings as they are regular traffic stoppers here, but no...it was a large, beautiful snapping turtle! Anyone on the island knows the first thing about snapping turtles is they bite. And the second is, their claws are REALLY sharp. As the crowd (three of us, then four) gathered looking at it, the main discussion was how to get it out of the street. I thought they had it under control so I saw my role as documenting the event (thus avoiding any contact with said turtle). He stared at me / us, just daring us to come closer. I respected his wishes and kept a respectful distance. Check out my extras album for the full event. http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2015-06-25
Thanks for the kind comments on my bread collage -- I put in the recipe I use into the thread for those who use bread machines.
Cool shot! Thanks for the link to the 'event' - I was about to ask what kind of size these guys are. Now I know. I did not know however that they bite and scratch!
What a wonderful capture and great story :) He sure has sharp claws which I've never seen on turtles! So pleased you all rescued it - I looked at your collage too. Fav
They can also be quite heavy. My husband tried to move on that had gotten hit by a car. He was surprised at how heavy it was. Beautiful shot. Glad this one was OK.
They are not usually welcome guests! In fact I know of some places in NJ where the fishermen purposely run them over if they see them in the street. Thankfully for this old "grumpy face" your "team" was not of the same mindset!
What a grumpy face he has! Just look at those claws - no wonder everyone was very careful around him and if he could bite a finger off you were very wise to be the photographer! Fav!
Boy, he looks vicious.....that visage, and those claws.....I am not surprised that you kept a healthy distance from him!! Speaking of healthy, he would have made a yummy turtle soup if he had not moved out of that road! Love the good samaritan story!! FAV! Great capture of this creature!
The high contrast (or is this high key) colour treatment works well here.
