Leave Me Alone! by taffy

Leave Me Alone!

Driving down Main Street (the one main street in what was once the fishing village of Beaver Island), I noticed the car in front of me curving around something in the street. I thought it might be ducklings as they are regular traffic stoppers here, but no...it was a large, beautiful snapping turtle! Anyone on the island knows the first thing about snapping turtles is they bite. And the second is, their claws are REALLY sharp. As the crowd (three of us, then four) gathered looking at it, the main discussion was how to get it out of the street. I thought they had it under control so I saw my role as documenting the event (thus avoiding any contact with said turtle). He stared at me / us, just daring us to come closer. I respected his wishes and kept a respectful distance. Check out my extras album for the full event.

Thanks for the kind comments on my bread collage -- I put in the recipe I use into the thread for those who use bread machines.
Crabby fella.

He's gorgeous! I usually just grab them by the back of the shell - if they aren't too big. Great picture! :)

He looks kinda sleepy - maybe the road is nice and warm on his tummy! A great shot - don't see many of these!

I enjoy his little wizened face, Yodo-esque expression and your story. You were wise to be the photojournalist for this rescue!

He's a real looker! Love this textures and story. glad you didn't get hurt.
June 26th, 2015
Love your story! Fortunately there are ways of picking them up without their beaks or claws getting near you!

The high contrast (or is this high key) colour treatment works well here.
June 26th, 2015
WOW..what a magnificent creature!! First class FAV!!!
June 26th, 2015
Cool shot! Thanks for the link to the 'event' - I was about to ask what kind of size these guys are. Now I know. I did not know however that they bite and scratch!
June 26th, 2015
He is a handsome fellow, glad you were able to relocate him safely and without any major incidents.
June 26th, 2015

A super detailed and clear shot . How silly of him to be on the road and so glad he was noticed and rescued !
June 26th, 2015
He's got his beady eye on you. I'd watch our if I were you. He's got that 'no prisoners' look on his face.

June 26th, 2015
great portrait.
June 26th, 2015
Love the textures, and I love that people stop to make sure he's safe. We see too many of his brethren as roadkill.
June 26th, 2015
Great shot! I've never seen a turtle in the street before ;-)
June 26th, 2015

June 26th, 2015
Lovely shot Taffy.
June 26th, 2015
A great natural history shot, even if the turtle is out of it's natural habitat (or maybe not). Also enjoyed your story book of the event.
June 26th, 2015
How amazing - and lovely. Such a nice image. fav.
June 26th, 2015
Gorgeous capture
June 26th, 2015
amazing capture, great details and focus
June 26th, 2015
They can also be quite heavy. My husband tried to move on that had gotten hit by a car. He was surprised at how heavy it was. Beautiful shot. Glad this one was OK.
June 27th, 2015
Wonderful capture
June 27th, 2015
Super capture!
June 27th, 2015
They are not usually welcome guests! In fact I know of some places in NJ where the fishermen purposely run them over if they see them in the street. Thankfully for this old "grumpy face" your "team" was not of the same mindset!
June 27th, 2015
Super closeup and textures
June 27th, 2015
What a grumpy face he has! Just look at those claws - no wonder everyone was very careful around him and if he could bite a finger off you were very wise to be the photographer! Fav!
June 27th, 2015
Boy, he looks vicious.....that visage, and those claws.....I am not surprised that you kept a healthy distance from him!! Speaking of healthy, he would have made a yummy turtle soup if he had not moved out of that road! Love the good samaritan story!! FAV! Great capture of this creature!
June 27th, 2015
Lovely detail...fav.
June 27th, 2015

June 29th, 2015
Great shot!
June 29th, 2015
you've captured him fabulously! Love how his head is tucked in, ready to strike when someone comes to close ;)
June 29th, 2015
I hate to meet up with those choppers and nails! What a cool story and photo!
June 30th, 2015
Perfectly documented! My neighbor and I took shovels and moved one out of the road years ago... neither of us got bitten so I count it as a success!
