Still working on the photos I took yesterday at the temple as we spent today getting back to the island after our whirlwind in Chicago. Left the house at 7:00 a.m., so we could...
1. go to the Evanston Farmers Market and get fresh veggies (not really available on island),
2. pick up Bagels (can't get them on the island),
3. drive 5 1/2 hours to Charlevoix,
4. pick up smoked salmon (not available on island)
5. send cargo over on the ferry, catch the short flight,
6. save ravaged tomato plants from results of gale force wind (very very very sad moment for me, and unexpected as I didn't realize the storm here had been so bad -- apparently our power was also out for 3 hours, per the stove's flashing clock time)
7. Meet friend who is here for a few more days for dinner in town
8. Go to concert for last weekend of Baroque on Beaver (during which time Jim snuck out to go over to ferry dock and get the cooler and other items sent over on ferry because too heavy for allowance on plane)
9. Back home to unload car and put away cooler items
10. Play on 365 site before posting and going to sleep.
Have just realized why I'm so tired!
This is awesome. When you get some rest, you might level the bottom of the stairs...definitely a shot worth the trouble. Somehow the HDR effect in b and w works better to my eye. By the way, my favorite of my recent composites is the egret and the milky way
@jgpittenger Thanks Jane! Off to sleep now but if you get a chance sometime, do you have any recommendation for straightening the stairs without tilting the dome? I think it's where I was standing and it seemed to be one or the other level. I had the stairs level, and then the dome looked off. This was the one that I found less disturbing (tilting dome really didn't look right). Any help would be greatly appreciated, as always!
@taffy I had someone walk me through it with PS before...about a year ago. I will play around with it tomorrow and let you know if I can do it and if so will show you how
Love your pov and editing. These certainly add even more impressiveness to the wonderful building. Great narrative too. I totally understand your need of rest, haha!
I need a nap too after reading all that
beautiful image - the stair tilt doesn't worry me - focus is quickly drawn to the rest of this majestic structure
Beautiful! Have you tried using the separate leveling bars in LR? You get up to 4 of them. Try drawing one across the bottom of the stairs, one from top to bottom through the center of the dome and the building. That might do it. If you need it, try a third across the bottom pillars. You can move the ends of the bars, to change the effect slightly. If that doesn't work to suit, try the Camera Raw perspective adjuster in Photoshop; I have found that one to work really well. Sorry about your tomato plants!
@rosiekerr Where are the leveling bars? In LR, I can find the Transform Level choices, but they seem to be more an auto, single choice. Or in Basic, there is the single angle line. I think I must not be looking in the right place. Thanks for any advice!
@taffy You access them using the guided adjustment button... they work on verticals and horizontals that aren't as vertical or horizontal as they should be!
Wonderful conversion Taffy! Wow you managed to cram so much into your day! Never let a minute pass if you can be doing something! Us mortals like to take it at an easier pace! Lol! Shame about the tomatoes! Enjoy your time on Beaver Island and try to relax a bit if you can! Fav!
@jgpittenger I think I figured out how to use the adjustments in the section where you can rotate, do horizontal, etc. in LR, but don't know how to do it in PS. @vignouse I don't know if those were the brushes you meant. This is the newer version, saved on top of the old one so I wouldn't lose the comments.
@taffy on the transform tab in LR - there is a grid on the top left - click that and you can draw the 4 grid lines to square the image. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlp8iXoWvU8
you can access the same thing in PS via Filter / Camera Raw filter/ transform section /guided
and... in PS I ran your image through the Nik RAW presharpener & the fine details just flew out at me! It might not be something you have used before, but for lots of fine detail it is brilliant. ( I used default 50% for adaptive & edges - just one click wonder) If it does happen to nudge the sky too far, use a few control points ( 'smart' masking) in minus amount to remove sharpening from the clouds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-V8QPcKagw is def worth watching re that filter
@ltodd Thanks Lynn! I'll check out the PS Nik RAW presharpener...I'm not familiar with that, so this is a good chance to learn it. And I see the LR functions in transform -- didn't know what that little box was for! Many thanks for your time!
Great shot Taffy. I see that you have already done your correction on this photo. You might want to look at Lens Correction in PS. It is under the Filter Tab. There is an auto lens correction which is not too bad but the custom tab allows you to fix geometric distortion as well as horizontal and vertical adjustments. The Perspective Warp tool is pretty cool also.
Wow... busy day... sorry about your tomatos
Architecture works so well in black and white and this is fabulous. Reminds me of a tiered wedding cake.

Sounds like you had a busy day!
