The June word of the day is vacation. In keeping with that, the photo is a vacation day for Greg, Jen, and grandkids hanging out at the beach, and then late afternoon in town where Jen, Nate, and I went to the Beaver Island Community Center to see their showing of Oz, the Great and Powerful. Rather than use a DVD, they decided to stream it (on an island with intermittent service -- can predict the outcome), so watching the movie consisted of:
1. getting there by 3:00
2. waiting and talking til 3:15 when the organizer explained she was getting an error message for the download
3. a friend's daughter-in-law and grandchild (age 11) to to help fix the download and successfully start the move at 3:30
4. movie stops suddenly at 4:15 because of loss of internet connection
5. Nate goes to control room and sets up streaming through his cell phone until Jen realizes he is using her limited bandwith account which would cost her a small fortune
6. While the 11 and 13 year olds are able to get things going again using Jen's account, island internet was not able to be restored so everyone got a 'rain check' for the next movie
7. Lesson learned by community center folks: Use DVDs
8. Nate's reward for trying to fix things: a trip to Daddy Frank's for ice cream with his mom and me.
@jyokota Yep -- that was the total surprise to him. Took a lot of planning (including having Greg pick up a case of wine we left with Bill to bring up, but then realized you and he may not make it!). So, kids, wine, fun...what could have been better?
@jetpics@anazad511 Thanks Janette and Ana. It was so Beaver Island-y...thinking that you could offer weekly movies through streaming when most of us know that we may not be able to finish writing and sending email in one session! Oh well...good that everyone was a good sport about it.
wonderful story - yep you can always rely on internet service too stuff up just when you need it - no matter where you are - these are the stories you remember though so it is all worth it :)
What a fantastic story! I lived an island off the coast of WA for eight years and am oh so familiar with the island ways. Wonderful memories and I love the photo capture.
Love this - the photo and the narrative. What would we do without 11 and 13 year olds to lead us through the electronic age. At first I thought this was one photo and wondered how you achieved that cool sky, then realized it was two! Silly me.
@seanoneill Thank you Sean -- that's a lovely thing to write!
@jankoos I agree, Jan. Island living is different -- showing me how much I take for granted when in the city.
@barbsmith Thanks Barb! I did play around a bit with it to not have it immediately pop as two photos, but didn't try to actually merge into one. Glad you noticed.
At least they tried- good for them- and good for Jen who realized how the connection was being made before she had to sell off her first born to pay for it! Cute story and shot.
