@jyokota Junko posted a shot of me taking a photo under the bridge. I realized this is what I was doing so thought I would post the result just for fun -- HDR using 3 bracketed shots. Critique: too much going on...where is your eye supposed to land? See Junko's image here: http://365project.org/jyokota/365/2018-01-07
@taffy -- fun, indeed, to see what you were working on in the C-O-L-D! I see what you mean about it being busy. I wonder if you darkened the under the bridge part that would help give it a darker ceiling?
@jyokota Exactly! I think that's what it needs... wanted to get the bridge because I was intrigued by the structure, ended up with bridge and ice, and couldn't let go of either one, so in the end, it didn't work.
It suffers by comparison with the other (ice bank) -- perhaps as you say too much going on - visually busy, without the dynamic something-actually-going-on that the ice photo has. Still, I'd hate to see you lose the neat lines of those girders.
Far to analytical for me Taffy. Just enjoy the bridge, and the structure, and the ice, and the river, and the buildings, and the lighting, and the background to the photo. :-)
Lovely textures in the shot, but like you mentioned, there does seem to be a lot going on. The shot could easily improve by making sure it's symmetrical (instead of being slightly shifted to the left) and even cropping it into a square. Perhaps a larger aperture to blur out some of the background could also bring the focus back to the beams (which I view as the main focus point). My 2 cents :)
I deleted my previous comment because I changed my mind. My eye is drawn to the structural elements of the bridge, which are wonderful in HDR. The light pattern in the water seems to compliment that. So although there is a lot going on, it all seems to work together to present an effective, gritty image of winter.
I can see what you're driving at, but I rather like this more 'scenic' view, gives a real feel for the moment. I can see at least two different images here. The underside of the bridge is well worth featuring as the solo act as well although I'd use PS to straighten up the slight curve in the centre beam (which would probably also give you improved symmetry).
I agree with Diane Owens. My eye first landed on the frost covered bridge structure. The eye travels between it and the white of the floating ice. Both elements attract attention, but neither dominates. I see a theme: Humans can't beat winter. The best we can do is tie.
Love the detail of the bridge And the ice in the river Taffy. I think I would be tempted to put this into Topaz and use Mask and a texture to slightly fade the detail either side. Well done for getting out there in the cold for these images! Good to see what you were doing in Junko’s capture!
I don't think I'd darken it but maybe this should have been vertically composed instead of horizontally? Seems to me your attraction was the pattern and symmetry of the trusses and that's why the buildings and water distracts the eye. Just a thought. I still like it.
