So, I moan all the time about various things:
Moon shots
drip crowns
inanimate blah
And if anyone encourages my moaning you very quickly discover the source - I think not enough people shoot people. Not enough 365ers take the bull by the horns and feature humans. Us. Life. What's important. Yep sure, its harder than taking pics of trees and shit. But it has its rewards. So, post a portrait or a candid so I can feel less alone. Even better, be inspired and do it tomorrow. Tag your photos silly-tag-nonesense2012portrait-edition.
@chewyteeth i LOVE that photo...somehow I missed it yesterday!
I also love shooting people, but mostly people I know.
It helps that I have one of the coolest teenagers on the planet who will pose for me almost any time I ask. :)
@andycoleborn ok your the exception super-Andy but look at the PP man, its birds and flowers and shit. Those girls make nice models, it's the smiles which light the picture up.
I don't post pictures of people I know and I got rid of all my selfies. I rarely take pictures of people in general so I really had to dig for this one. :)
@beautifulthing well you should do more this is fkin sweet. You 'got rid' of all your selfies -That sounds like a bad day in Shelly-ville, does someone need a hug?
I am no good at the birds and "stuff" (paraphrasing) that you speak of, so I hardly ever do photos of people. However, here is one I did in July of 365ers @musicguy1982 and @embermae . It needs a lot of work, but I tried.
Two of my favorite things married in one shot: The ocean and my kiddo. The fact that I got his shadow and reflection was a complete bonus. I just ordered a canvas print of this one and can't wait for it to arrive:
@chewyteeth Haha, you are so right. I love portrait shots! I have finally to decide myself, and stop taking selfies and take a model out for a photoshoot :D
well, this is a person... its candid, and it was an accident (I was trying to figure out how to get the configuration thing to come up on the photo app and it snapped this pic) Maybe I should accidentally take pics of people more often.
I could just kiss you!!!! I always hear people complaining about portraits and pics of kids but guess what I hate a lot of the stuff I see on here too. Anyway I am excited because portraits are what I love best. On board for this one:)
Here's one I posted today as a filler for a few days ago, just because I love it. It's not particularly 'artistic' and I don't expect many comments but I still love it because they are my kids and I love the smiles on their faces. ;)
I agree, not enough people shoot people! And people really do make some of the best subjects for photography. I think that for most of us, even though others are all around us, it can sometimes feel like there is no one we're actually able to photograph.
I need to do more people shots, but my daughter won't pose, the teenagers I take pictures of all the time at work would mean a lot of permissions to put photos up on here, and I live in a small town where I know too many people, so have been put off posting street candids on here because the comments made on the shot meant I wouldn't do that to anyone else I know again
I dedicated February to only people shots and I think that I prefer to take people shots now that I have looked at them and had all these different ideas.
This is yesterdays shot of my house mates
I am really not comfortable doing portraits of people, I should really try harder, the only person I take lots of photos of is my 90 year old Mum, she photographs so well and I am constantly surprised by her ability to enjoy every moment of her life.
@grizzlysghost
The sad truth, people is too scared to do it, but the thread shows that when its done it makes pictures you can stare at for ages, and I for one ain't staring at a copulating fly for ages.
My fav thing to photograph is people. I love portraits, and candids. So far most of my subject matter has been children, but I hope to expand on that soon.
I'll send you my postcode.
Portraits is about the only thing you can do where someone can't say the line, 'well if you've seen one you've seen them all.' Which is not true of
-moons
-sunsets
-water crowns
-babies lovingly arranged in silly hats on a cushion
-dogs
-Birds
etc etc
keep on!
@chewyteeth Thanks, Dave! And I agree on the dirty knees - they are so closely associated with childhood play, they add immediate recognition/nostalgia.
@chewyteeth LOL....but it really WAS an accident. This happened at the end of the night, most of the teams had already left and there were just a few stragglers. I was tired and bored and messing with my cell phone. If I wanted to "accidentally" be stealth and sneak in a shot, I would have done it when it was busy and full of athletes and so many people that no one would have noticed.... but we were instructed not to take any pics so I didn't try.
I hardly ever take pictures of people (apart from me, oh narcissism!). Here are a couple:
BTW @chewyteeth I think your portraits are awesome. In the least patronising way possible, I think you've improved soo much in the last 6 months. Look forward to seeing more. Ledge.
Yes, I'm one of those who consider my dogs to be people! Here's our "baby" Annabelle with my husband Jeff. I am not all that great at typical portraits, but i can feel the love in this one. ;)
Geez..you have a hate on for water shots? I'd rather shoot a drop/crown than a person. I can control the water whereas people blink/move/complain! If I get pissed off, I can smack and swear at the water...that doesn't go over so well with people :)
I've tried 3 times to put some people shots here and it keeps saying invalid data.
The interweb knows they are crap :)
This is probably my favourite people shot from my project. I take many people shots, but don't always choose to upload them for concern over getting permission, depending of course, who it is. If its a stranger, it doesn't feel like an invasion of privacy for some strange reason...
@davetom
hey no cheating, those images are on another site we shall not mention.
Superb though, I'd fav if they were on here.
Especially the redhead, beautiful picture.
@aleksandra beautiful, you can print releases off the internet, but its only for if you wanna sell stuff, don't worry about rights to pics, its a non issue, I shoot models and they don't care where I post stuff as long as they get copies, and I know a ton of photographers who shoot models and don't get releases.
Sorry... Didn't know the rules that the images had to be stored on this site. I guess that is one reason why one would want to have an "ACE" membership. I just wanted to offer something different.
@chewyteeth I'm spending hours on this thread, discovering members who I've never seen before, wonderful!! Heres another fave of my own, my daughter Terri : )
@lorraineb
well you processed it super. I recently was waiting for a model having her makeup done by a MUA and I tried taking shots and they all turned out cheesy wedding cliche style over the MUAs shoulder, this one has class.
Dave I agree with you that people aren't captured enough. in general it seems that there is some fear of invading privacy... I shoot everything and anything that catches my eyes. Less birds unless i get lucky enough to see a humming bird with my camera in hand. Depending on the situation, at times on the weekend i will hunt for an amazing image in the "tourist traps" areas of town... A high variety of types of people.
Most of my shots lately have been people. But most of them are the "look at the camera and smile" type. Like seeing the variety of people pics on this thread. This one is my girl with her bff:
I also love shooting people, but mostly people I know.

Here's today's effort
I love it btw, super old persons portrait, detail is nice.

I was irritated by my own fear of asking strangers for a portrait - so I made it one of my 365 goals! I also started a discussion about it where some others have posted their stranger portraits if you want to check it out...
http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/11597/post-your-stranger-portraits#comments
All of the ones I just posted above were a result of that goal :) Oh and this one too: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bjornert/6958189279/in/set-72157629595213271
Good discussion thread! There are some neat ones in here!

Great captures

Feel free to switch to boring trees and daffodils, you'd fall asleep whilst adjusting your f.stop.
Gorgeous portrait
yeah sure, all the pics I take of half naked handsome young men are 'accidents' too.
My fav thing to photograph is people. I love portraits, and candids. So far most of my subject matter has been children, but I hope to expand on that soon.

I'll offer up some of my fashion/beauty images that I've done.
I've tried 3 times to put some people shots here and it keeps saying invalid data.

@davetom these are spectacular!
