The last two days of your black and white journey have arrived! We’ll be “rounding” out our month by returning to the circle theme. This should make for a nice “bookend” effect on your calendar view.
Circles are one of the most appealing shapes in art. Volumes have been written on what makes them attractive and why we get such pleasure and joy when looking at them in a picture or anywhere else for that matter. Author/photographer Noor-e Sehar writes, “What is it about the circle that appeals to the human eye? What is it about a circle that inspires both connectivity and independence? And what is it about those three-dimensional transformations, the sphere and the ovoid, that appeal to the human body and mind?... The wholeness of a circle evokes many a response, to admire it, to play with it, to poke it, to touch it, to protect it. It evokes action, maybe because inherently, in the case of a rounded egg, the globular brain, and the earth: activity is always pulsing.” Who knew circles could be so compelling?!
John Suler in his book Photographic Psychology: Image and Psyche noted, “Our environment generously offers us a wide range of circular things to shoot. Besides eyes, wheels, and heavenly bodies such as the moon, there are balls, clocks, fruit, globes, plates, cups, gears, disks, gauges, table tops, and signs, to name a few. Their circularity has an intrinsic appeal, both symbolically and on a purely visual level.” Sular continues to delve into the appeal and draw of the circle to our eyes on the deepest of levels and although this introduction to our final days of black and white may seem rather heady, in speaking of these geometric shapes one can simply state, circles are nice to look at and they make us feel good.
This week (all two days of it!) look for circles. You can photograph circles, circular objects, one circle, several circles or even capture them hovering in a background as bokeh. The artistic subject choice is yours but the genre of black and white remains until the month is over.

And last but not least! Show off your Flash of Red Calendar in the discussion thread below when the month is done. You’ve earned bragging rights by sticking with this challenge to the very end. I hope you’ve had fun with it, stretched yourself and learned a little. I have truly enjoyed popping around and seeing some of your pictures even though I did not comment on them all.
Sorry I didn't stick with it until the end as I was away on and off throughout February. Next year! In the meantime, thanks for all your curation and guidance. I have loved seeing the photos and reading the material you have provided.
I love circles - in particular, Mandalas. I have used these lots and my Masters dissertation was on using mandalas to help children tell their stories, so a perfect beginning and end for me! Thank you Ann for all you have put into the challenge again this year. Anne
@Dawn Good for you Dawn! I'm glad you enjoyed the challenge- you deserve to be proud of yourself!
@jamibann Thanks Issi! It's been a really long time since I photographed a full moon in black and white- I really had to dig in the archives for this one. We have weather rolling in for the next two days and the moon is in a crescent so no full moon shots to close out the month this time.
Really enjoyed the month thank you Ann. Who knew a week of flat grey weather could produce satisfactory flat grey landscape images. Learnt a lot this month, here's to next year!!!
Thank you Laura, Jackie and Christina! I really have so much fun doing this and I'm always thrilled when so many people enjoy it and get something out of it!
Thank you Dixie and Gerry! I'm so glad you enjoyed the month- it's so exciting to see how so many people come up with such great looking calendars like yours!
I never tire of taking pictures of this grand circle.
