Another go at focus stacking, this time with 50mm lens and more care taken with exposure settings and composition. This is 21 photographs, I've purposefully left the star anise at the top not focused as a comparison and I don't think it detracts too much?!
@randystreat Hi Kathy another go at your get pushed challenge, had a lot of fun setting this up - I tried low key on black, then green velvet and finally settled on the white - which may have been an error as reflections detract a little bit?
@monikozi I've left some spices near the top unfocused as a comparison for us both and a way for the eye to drift back down the diamond shape of sharpness.
@wakelys we honestly do use these, not just for photo props!!
@gardencat Joanne thank you for your advice earlier this week
@kali66 hi- no insects around but thought tiny spices might be a good substitute- thanks for your advice earlier this week
Just worked out really well! I love the subject. You did a remarkable job though because it looks like one photo. Clever to leave the one out of focus for comparison. I don’t find the spices drab at all but I agree they are a bit monochromatic. This would also almost work for the flat lay challenge
I think this worked well. The OOF elements at the back do give a sense of depth. I think the thing with focus stacking is to be able to get everything you want in focus not necessarily the whole image in focus, unless of course you do want the whole image in focus. My disappointment with the technique is that it really has to be done, inside, under strict control, where nothing moves(no wind for instance) and lighting doesn't change. At least that's what I've found when I tried it.
I think that you've got the technique down. I like that you are excited enough abou t the challenge to try it several times. but I feel bad for challenging you to something I hate to do (or should I say, attempt). There's a guy in my photo club who focus stacks all his close up flower shots. They are quite breath taking. It's second hand to him now, but I told him the technique is not for me. It may be that I don't have the lenses to do it correctly. Sometime if you have nothing to do and want to challenge yourself, try it with a single flower. Get in close.
@kjarn they were a gift from a special friend for or 25th anniversary thank you @randystreat I will thanks Kathy, once the photos are done it's up to Affinity
@casablanca borrowed /nicked from a friend @robz set up tripod set to manual and move focus- takes a couple of minutes @monikozi thanks the technique makes sense now @koalagardens thank you @gardencat many thanks @grammyn thank you Katy as i am one of @thedarkroom I don t feel I can tag my own, despite being nagged by two other members!!! @wakelys I do too
This is really well done, Jackie. It is a wonderful composition with great depth of field!
Though - I know that your challenge was to learn the process but I believe that you could have achieved the same effect in this case by stepping down your aperture rather than have it wide open as you did.

Well done!
I am a lazy photographer who tries to get the shot with the least effort possible hence my suggestion!
