Typically I don't bring friends with me for the behind-the-scenes primping, but today was something a little special. When I'm here in California, I can always count on good access to hair salons and can get my nails done in almost any shopping center. I have had my favorite spots though, for years. And these people are so capable at what they do! Every few weeks we spend an hour or more chatting, and ...well...you get it...they're friends...
I feel bad saying this, but we have nothing like this is Lunenburg. I've gone to 8 or more hairdressers over the years we've been going north, and I always return home, crushed at the bad haircuts I get. Oh, the people are definitely nice enough, but that almost makes it worse that I'm unhappy with the end result. And nail salons...there's one, a 20 minute drive away, but it looks a little sketchy. I also found one that was a part of a clothing alteration shop...it's not a high priority up there... So in two weeks I'll just cut my nails and be done with it for the summer. And when I need a hair cut, I'll go into high anxiety mode. You now know more about me than I should let on, but there you have it. Now I won't have to make excuses when I have a "little pixie" hairdo!
Ken always tags along with me to these places and enjoys the people as much as I do. The photos are all his today if you care to see "my last spa day" http://365daysintheyear.shutterfly.com/400
Ooh - I love the 'pink-and-white'! I haven't had them since we started all these home projects...what a fun salon day and how adorable that Ken tags along with you!!! He's a keeper!
I love the "behind-the-scenes" AND a link to the special features. You're spoiling us. re: your Cinco de Mayo pic: Ricardo's isn't anything outstanding. I think I'll have to bring Susie and the kids to Mile Square Park one day and we can talk good eats while squirrel watching.
great photos! I know how you feel! I only have one hairdresser I trust with my life. I'm always away at college so I don't get to go as much as I want! One time I came home and my hairdresser asked why my hair was lopsided.. haha! The worst one was when I asked from more layers and the lady gave me a mullet.. =[ no joke.. i was crushed! I couldnt be mean to her even though I wanted to cry because she was nice.. I had to have my teammate style my hair for 2 months! I'm now deathly afraid to go to anyone but my main hairdresser!
What a fun collage! I totally hear you, my hairdresser is 200 km from where I live and I'm too scared to try something new here because I know it will be a bit of a disappoint ment until I find someone as brilliant as the old one!
I do believe Ken has a knack for photography. Tell Ken he did an awesome job as Louise sub. today! : ] Louise, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed, I'm not even sure if I am a tool but I think I need to make a flow chart! I looked and I definitely don't know Ellen but if Ellen's friend Linda is Linda C... I DO know Linda C, we were on an outrigger team together... and of course I know Andrea P. The plot thickens! This is all kind of exciting...
Love the collage!
The colours are great!
Love feeling like I've gone along with you on your "spa day" as well!.
HA HA..and my stepmom was at the dentist yesterday, too ( and by yesterday, I mean, Wednesday! ;-)
This is a great photo. I'm glad you enjoyed your day of pampering and time with friends. It's funny that even though so many of us spend so much time with stylists and the ladies who do our nails, but rarely do I hear these people referred to as friends. I find it very touching that you view your relationship with them in that way. And I have to tell you, Ken sounds like one very cool guy! Precious few men I know would tag along happily, and even fewer would enjoy it.
Hairdressers, makes me go into a cold sweat just thinking about going, it's worse than the dentist, but obviously it has to happen so I try them all and then end up the same one I've gone to for years! Hope you're feeling well pampered, nails look great!
At my house my husband and I cut each other's hair so we always have a hairdresser available! Other advantages: reasonable price and no tip required and we have no trouble getting an appointment!
we, the women, all get it... I wouldn't dare "cheat' on my hairdresser... unless I am gone for a few months... you look wonderful...
about your comment... that was funny... you are right! those birds are wondering who the heck is she?
Your hair and nails look great! And boy do we all know that hairdresser story - six years of living in big cities like Chicago and DC, and yet I still go to my pre-college hairdresser in my parents' little suburb whenever I can. She just does a better job, and usually for $30-40 less than I get charged in the city. And since my hair is long, it's not the end of the world if there's 3 or 4 months between cuts....;)
On your comment - we bill in tenths of an hour, not tenths of a minute (thank god!). So if I spend 47 minutes working for a client, that's 0.8 hours. It still gets very annoying though, and I'm pretty ready to be judged by what I accomplish in a day, rather than how much time I bill to clients...
onion, Louise ... you are really cramming in those last minute appointments to tide you over for a couple of months, aren't you?!!? You look mah-valous, dahling, for your upcoming visit in Chicago!
Totally "get" the nail thing ... my nails are the one thing I maintain religiuosly!
Wonderful collage! Loved all the other photos also. The same person has cut my hair for the last 25 years so I know exactly what you mean. If he moves away or retires...I guess I'll just have to shave my head...LOL
Fun photos, Louise. I'm not at all surprised these ladies are your friends. I'm betting your grocery clerk, mailman, gas station attendant and librarian are your friends, too, if you're in real life the way you are here!
your beauty team look like such a lovely friendly bunch and you look fabulous. Like Jane, I have hairdresser-phobia (must be a family trait!) and I have only ever had my nails done once (and that was to entertain my boys when they were toddlers and we were stuck in a hotel on a rainy day on a work trip!!). I do like my current hairdresser though (just in case he's reading this - don't want any accidental scalping incidents next time I'm there!!!)
You asked what program I use: it is Photoshop CS4, I love it.
Here in Sao Paulo I think we are lucky, we have many wonderful nail salons and hair salons.
Ooh, hairdressers...the word makes my skin crawl. I've never had a really tragic accidental scalping, but I live in dread fear of it, especially since I have reached the age where long hair is supposedly "no longer appropriate." You look like you had a great time, and you look wonderful!
I've also had the same hairdresser since 1st moving to Richmond, in 1986! I watched her get married, add 3 dogs to her household, buy her 1sst house and later sell that to buy a bigger one. She now has 2 kids, 1 of which is now in college and the other about to graduate from high school.
Well, that must be it for your "before we leave" to-do list...er, but have you packed yet!!!
wow, this is REAL-TIME! i also go to beauty/hair salons where the hairdressers are vietnamese here in melbourne, they're very easy to talk to and ready to give you the friendliest and quality service! nice haircut!
Well your team did a good job Louise, you're all primped and beautiful for your trip to your daughters, hope you have a lovely time, enjoy your summer in Nova Scotia, looking forward to some photos from there. We'll all be looking forward to your return in the autumn.
Hugs Sue T
you know... I had your haircut for years... short brown hair that was so easy to manage. I would go swimming at lunch time and by the time I arrived at work... it was dry... loved it... then decided to change the lenght and color... I like the new me... but gee! it is much harder to handle..
about your comment... i love my local theaters... I belong to several of them and just love helping out...
I keep saying it... have fun in Canada... I will be home in Quebec in August... looking forward to it.
loving the "day in the life" feel to your last two shots..(although i hate going to the hairdressers and hate the dentist even more!) Im getting a picture of you as being the kind of person that steps outside her front door and knows the entire neighbourhood by name.......and just like on 365, Im sure everyone around you in your *real life* loves you to bits.
Alrighty, then, Miss Enquiring Mind. I thought about keeping you in suspense for a while longer, to make sure that you don't forget us in your new home ;) But that would be pretty cruel, and I don't think you're much of a "flight risk" from this website, so I guess it's confessions time.
I'm that formerly little, formerly non-English speaking daughter that mirmax has been writing about here and there. The country in question is the US - I'm moving from my current home in DC up to my parents' house to spend the summer with them - and the continent in question is Europe. Corey and I are moving (back, in my case) to Germany in the fall.
Any other questions? :)
Safe travels tomorrow, if we don't write before then.
thank you for my bye bye message !!! made me cold morning warmer !! you and ken have a awesome time running around the world together like a pair of newly weds , will be looking forward to u poping by at times .. love n kisses for u both !!! have a ball !!!!!!!!!! :) xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Hehe....yeah, it's amazing our hands fit together so well, considering how much bigger his are.
Have fun in Chicago! I went to school there, and it's an absolutely wonderful city. If it's already nice enough out, you should have a picnic on the shores of the lake with your girls!
It looks like you all had so much fun! :) Thank you for taking us along with you. I enjoyed it. You know, Chris used to always tag along with me to hair appointments, doctor visits...whatever. He'd sit in the waiting room with a book or his iPod...and just wait. What you and Ken have is truly amazing and wonderful...so cherish it close to you each and every day.
Louise! I just read your comment on Jojo's page about you & Ellen E's mom. Wow... what a small world! So you grew up in Missouri, winter in LA-ish, and summer in Nova Scotia? I'm fascinated. What brought you to LA and when? And how are you connected to NS?
By the way, my parents are going to be in Nova Scotia this summer!
hahaha! yes we are very much looking forward to meeting you! it feels much more important and fun than our up coming "quarterly meeting" (kerri and catherine will agree with me on that :)) Sue already "warned" me: no paper plate, so i guess all we need to do is to find a "decent" waitress, maybe we should do a "background check", ask only one question: are you a 365er? hahaha!
Great collage! Sounds like you had a nice relaxing experience. I am sure all of the stylists and nail technicians will miss you over the summer. PS. I got such a kick out of the end of your caption... that is so charming that Ken "tags along" with you when you go to the salon. You seem like such a cute couple and he seems like such a nice man. Maybe we should call him "Saint Ken"... :)
I love this collage and the story behind it! I am extremely lucky in that my sister is a cosmetologist and lives 10 minutes away so my hair is always the way I want it. Good luck and enjoy your trip.
Wow you look fabulous lovely collage too! Great that youu all spa - ed and groomed ready for the summer. Looks like whereever you & Ken go you spread a bit of fun. I'm not really a hair & nail person myself & you can tell. Find it hard to get the time!
I was never much of a girly girl...but every now and then I like to change it up a bit.
happy friday!
The colours are great!

I have been meaning to ask - are you flying or driving on your trip? You are welcome to swing up to MN if you are driving through the midwest. :-)
My mother always said, "the only difference between a good hair cut and a bad one is 2 weeks". :D
