All yesterday we heard the sound of cannons down in the harbor but didn't go to look as the weather was so wet. (Often the tall ships set off rounds when nearing the warves, so it's not uncommon to hear). Today, our curiosity led us to the dock as we drove home late this afternoon, and we were rewarded with a wonderful sight. Several tall ships are in port, but I don't know the reason. I wish now that we'd braved the weather to see them out on the water! My photo is of the rigging of The Pride of Baltimore II, and if you're curious, here's a nice clip of her out on the water http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqDlXu6JlHs&feature=related She was "...built as a reproduction of 1812-era topsail schooners, the type of vessels, called Baltimore Clippers, that helped America win the War of 1812 and finally secure its freedom."
(A new movie, The Disappeared, is presently being filmed on the waters off Lunenburg, but what we've read doesn't sound like a period piece from that Tall-Ship era.)
(Of the movies filmed here last summer, Jumping the Broom, has been in theaters, and Cloudburst was shown last week at The Toronto Film Festival. The t.v. series, Haven, is back for a second season, so the filming around here continues.)
Gorgeous! I can't imagine how long it must take to rig one of those for the first time. The number of lines is just astounding! I imagine it takes some time to learn what line controls what. So cool that you got to see a bunch of tall ships in port. They really are amazing!
Such a splendid and majestic shot! The video was great. At first I thought they were staging a sea battle until I realized the cannon fire was a welcome into port. What an incredibly gorgeous vessel! Love this photo.
A wonderful shot, Louise. It makes you want to stand up and salute or at least sing the Star Spangled Banner. :) You have the best things to see when you're there.
@suelbiz47 Oh, I really found the image moving as well! We stood there looking at the ship a long while as the sun was setting. We even went back down there at 8:30 this morning as the sun was facing it, but it wasn't as dramatic. Still, such a beautiful ship and flag, it was worth the second visit!
I really enjoyed the clip.
