Never get into a discussion about whether or not "craft" is "art"... In certain circles, the discussion can become heated! IMHO I think it can certainly be elevated to that level. This is an annual event that I attended eagerly in the early years, but too many booths were filled with repetitive items made with poorly selected fabric covered in too much lace! I stopped attending... This summer I was ready to give it another look, and was greatly impressed with the transformation! Oh, there were 2-3 die-hards, still pushing tea towels with crochet flaps to hang on the stove and oven mitts made with poorly selected fabric...so sad...the effort is there, but no one buys that anymore. Of the items shown, I bought from four of these places (and from others...) I was delighted with what I got, and I'd rather buy directly from the artist on any day.
...I made a couple of new friends, and that may have been the best take-home treat of all!
For me the collection of arts looks impressive and the way you have put into collage ....... I tell you I felt as if I visited the venue. Definitely a great collection of arts and a great place to know things.
Lovely collage.
I'd recently posed the same question- "craft" vs. "art" - on my Facebook page. To be honest, I forget the replies most poignant, but I recall it involved talk of craft being more about reproduction (multiple pieces of the same) and functionality.
I asked because I am interested in trying my hand at Copper Foil Embossing. Most books or references I'd found on the subject referred to it as a craft, not as art.
I create art.
I decided to view it as that- art.
@jrambo001 So nice to see this reply from you, an artist of note! I would agree with those assessments. As I noted, I think there's a point of elevation with whatever tools you use. I recall a first-rate Master Calligrapher telling us about a man doing calligraphy with found objects while imprisoned during the Holocaust. She stressed then that it's not the expense of the tools, but the creation that flows from the artist. (Multiples of the same thing/same pattern, and perhaps not a design of one's own creation...however well executed... that might be considered craft...) Thanks for sharing!
@digitalrn The lady, top center left is holding the mittens I bought...would you believe $2.50?! I went back and got 5 pair to send to Heather for her baby store! Up here the people nearly "give away" the knit goods...and I personally know what a lot of work they are! One lady brings darling knits for infants to the market...I already got a sweater & bib...I'm going to have Ken take pix of what she's got in the AM...let me know if you'd like to see...I've got your email addy...
