After running errands, we headed to Huntington Beach to watch the sunset...and what a reward it was this evening! From beginning to end, it lasted a full 50 minutes of color and reflections and I have no end of closeups that look fabulous! After picking through them all, both Ken and I settled on this one. It's unusual to see the beach when it's not packed with people, and it was fun to see those there with cameras of every size and all types. A few children were still braving the water's edge and this youngster had a "skim board" to slide on the wave as it came across the sand; I photographed him for a long while. This photo has far less color than most that I took, but I liked the image.
We wondered for a long while what that upward burst of color above the island might be. Amazingly, it is a phenomenum called a Light Pillar https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pillar (Ken will be so happy to read about this when I tell him in the morning!)
When I'd exhausted every possible photo image I could think of, we went to Duke's, our favorite restaurant on the water, for mai tai's and some fish tacos. Now if that's not "fine dining", I don't know what is! (It was "Mighty Fine"!)
what a beautiful sight and isnt the light pillar an amazing phenomenon. How lovely to be able to spend time watching nature's light show and then enjoy a lovely meal together.
You all are so good to me! Thank you for the many faves! I don't typically do a group note of thanks, but would rather go to your site and leave some comments. Just know how lovely it's been to see so many of you gathered here with me at sunset! I'm basking in the friendship!
Don't know where to start!! The layers of colors and the waves are amazing!! The solitary boy standing there and looking so small in such a huge world is another story and the painting of the sky and sun pillar are outstanding!! An instant FAV for me.
@cashew Thanks so much Kathy! The reason I chose this particular one was that this boy, as charming as his stance was, was so insignificant in the midst of that big world! It does bring the word. "AWE" to the forefront!
just lovely! I like the tiny figure that captures the majesty of the scene...and to have the reflection too is perfect. It must be nice to be there even if you miss being east. Fav!
@taffy To be able to get to the beach for a change is wonderful! It's not a terribly long drive...just lots of traffic! OK, Chicago has its traffic as well, but I just read your mention of *the train* and being able to play with apps along the way... Thanks for stopping by. (We'll be in Carlsbad to meet Ken's former office staff for brunch tomorrow. Wish you were here!)
@Weezilou I was so sad to have missed you when we were there. What a great place for photography! Are you going to get to the beach before brunch? It was so beautiful there in the morning. Have fun! And you probably know from your daughter that it's miserable here -- rainy snow, cold, yucky, gray. I don't think I'll leave the house tomorrow!
@taffy Would that you might help Heather fly out here with the babies in early February. It'll probably be even *worse* there by then! I'm hoping Heather will join us at least once in Chicago for a shoot. She started me on 365 and was a member for awhile. Now it's all Pintrest and Instagram... so many choices!
very nice of osia @panthora to have bequeathed you the sunset and the silhouettes that go with it. :-) i'm kicking myself that i didn't see this right away. it's an awesome capture!
@summerfield haha! and don't you know I was trying my hardest to channel Osia the whole while! There were just no interesting people silhouettes...until this boy came along! His mother would die of happiness to have the lovely images I got of him! Had to have this one with the sunset at the top, however! (No kicking allowed!)
@Weezilou You never know!!! Junko and I are doing an overnight in DC in a few weeks...I'm liking these quick trips where we've found cheap flights, good deal on a hotel, and intense time for photographing.
@taffy I treat the bequeathed imagery with respect as it's a lot of live up to! She's a short walk to the beach...us, a bit longer... HOWEVER , I've convinced my friends, with whom we've gone out for Mexican food on Monday nights, we should start going to Dukes, so we'll be there again Monday...and I requested we go in time for sunset photos! I'm not shy abuot thinking big and asking for it ALL!
Gorgeous shot Louise! I'm thinking you were up on the pier to get this one. Or flying your drone again. Sorry I missed the farmer's market band and dinner at Dukes.
Fav!
@redy4et I've just invited Joy to come up for a stay-over to go to hear the musicians in Anaheim on an upcoming last Saturday of each month...a circle of people who keep alive the traditions of traditional Bluegrass, Folk & Gospel music. Further, I suggested another brunch at Duke's... Sound like a plan? I'll keep you on the get-together list as I think it could be great fun with lots of photo ops! @joysfocus
Beautiful, that's what you mentioned before. Would have loved to be there, will one day though. I also liked the comment about Duke's, your favorite restaurant on the water, would love to have mai tai's and some fish tacos. 😊
