When our 365 members in SoCal met up in Los Angeles, we toured what is the oldest existing house in the city. Quoting the sign out front, "Built about 1818 by Don Francisco Avila, it was occupied briefly as American Headquarters in 1847. Severely damaged in the earthquake of 1971, the house is now restored as an example of the California life style of the 1840s."
The home was, to my surprise, quite large. Built of thick adobe blocks, the house was cool inside, but would have been warm in the winter. They lived with their Catholic religion, and every piece of art in the home reflected that.
I may post pictures of the interior in my 4 albums today as we're packing to go visit the kids up the coast, and the days ahead will begin to get busier.
How interesting! I bet there are some beautiful pieces of antique furniture there! Good that they have restored the house after the earthquake. Their Catholic religion played a huge part in their lives as you can see.
I really glad that you urged us to go inside and visit this adobe home Louise. I have a much greater appreciation for the history and the people of early L.A. And an appreciation for some of the names I've heard so much, not realizing their origin. Thanks again!
Interesting commentary about the house!
