So how about THAT?! Ken wasn't around to get a photo yesterday when she sat on my lap for the first time, but this was a must-have for the books! Never mind that Ken and I were up before dawn for an out-patient procedure for him, and after a short-night's sleep, my eyes are drooping and I wasn't even aware of it!
On another occasion I want a "proper portrait" with a fresh haircut (greatly needed!) and a more rested look. But for now, there's no hiding how happy this makes me!
WOW!! What an incredible shot..... How did you ever convince him to jump up on your lap...? I ac't believe this. Is this in your yard here in SoCal? How long have you been working with him to do this! Definitely a must have fav! (Hope Ken is fine)
@aglennc Ken's well...all routine. I've been working with her (Posh) to take peanuts from my hand...kept encouraging her to come closer and yesterday she sat on my lap to eat out of my hand! I added pecans for her...a real enticement, I think, and she loves them!
oh, my goodness! now i'd be so expecting a portrait of you with all kinds of critters about you! a duck on the shoulder, a hummer on the other, butterflies in your hair, and buttercup on your arm, the squirrel on the other. i will need loads and loads of epipen when i see you next! how's ken doing, hope all's well. aces, my lady, aces!
@golftragic You know me! yep...the coolest! (Even Frosty of yesteryear didn't take to doing this!!!)
@amyk Thanks, Amy! Several years past, I befriended a squirrel in the yard that we called Frosty. She'd take food from my hand and even the grandsons could feed her. One birthing season she never returned and we were all crushed, but we've got several that come to the yard now, but this one's the friendliest. And yes, I actually have a t-shirt that says "Squirrel Whisperer" on it...which can only mean there are a lot of people capable of earning one!
@taffy I'm amazed, Taffy! I not only "let" her, I "encouraged" her! Being an island girl, I (wrongly) assumed you cultivated wildlife for friends! I'll hold almost anything that isn't poisonous!
@suelbiz47 Thanks, Sue! I think I may have been one of the first to carry peanuts to the park to feed the squirrels...now everyone does it! I was happy when they moved out into the neighborhoods as I can calculate when they're hungry and work to befriend them. This was a real coup!
Oh I am so pleased you managed to get your shot of this Louise! What a thrilling moment for you and for us to see! Wonderful to see the trust that Posh has - she can tell that you love her! What a magical moment! You may be tired but I can see your joy! Thanks for sharing this exciting moment! Fav!
How fabulous that your little friend trusts you this much. You are indeed an animal whisperer. A fabulous image of the both of you! PS: I hope Ken is feeling better and recovers quickly.
@stownsend As noted, we worked *together* on this! She wants me to know she's willing to do this, but don't try to pet her! And just keep the pecans coming!
@merrelyn We all need to know where our boundaries lie! Twice, when I was younger, I worked for Vets, so I've always loved working with animals...would have loved working for a zoo!
@novab I grew up with pet guinea pigs (at age 8) and look what it's come to! I do adore communing with an animal! Ken's at the gym this morning, so clearly all's well! Dr said he's good to go for the next 5 years!
@lynnz As happy as if I had a lap-full of kittens! Thanks!!
@louannwarren I was so happy!!! I put a little PS concealer on the dark circles under my eyes (!)...I was exhausted all afternoon... I couldn't raise my eyelids that were at half mast! Still, "A moment is a moment not to be missed!"
@Cherrill I DO burst with excitement at moments like this!!! Remember 2010 on 365 when Autumn had everyone sending me squirrel photos for a book?! She also sent a little plush squirrel... There were a lot of years leading up to this!
@jamibann "One of us" looks Marvelous, and I'm more than happy to be upstaged by a squirrel! Thanks!
Oh Louise this is just so lovely I'm sure you must have been thrilled to have her eating from your hand and sitting on your lap. I know that I would have loved it! Huge Fav for this gorgeous pic. No wonder you look so happy
Dear squirrel whisperer: Your look fabulous despite the way you describe feeling. Next time I come to visit, I would like a photo like this with all your animal friends. Such a wonderful capture!!! Fav!
Cute shot. Being patient is the key, I supose.
When my wife and her sister where kids her sister learned a parakeet - lovebird to talk. It could do more than ten words.
@pyrrhula When I was six I had a parakeet also! And yes, I spent a lot of time trying to teach her to speak...I think I got a few words! ("Sweetie-pie cupcake!" I believe it was!) I'm very still and patient with Posh, the squirrel. I don't try to touch her (though I'd love to!). She holds on to my hand to take the food...very cute!
Absolutely awesome! I agree with Amy...you are definitely the "squirrel whisperer"! I can do this with the chipmunks in Canada but the squirrels here in San Antonio are so skittish. I would love to have them sit on my lap like this. Has to be a FAV! :-)
