On our way to the falls, we passed this marvelous roadside stand where we'd once bought beets and tomatoes when coming back from whale watching. I was delighted to find more beets, onions and inexpensive pumpkins of many sizes! Were we year-round residents, I would have bought more for decorating, but I have enough for our front steps. Next on my list is to find a recipe for pickling beets...they'll be a taste-of-Nova Scotia that I can take back home with me!
I'm glad I got so many photos yesterday as we had a huge thunder storm last night and now it's supposed to rain all week. I'm baking bread today, and I plan to spend more time in the kitchen in the coming days! I love weather like this!
@pamknowler ...and you could test samples?? hahaha! Your name came up as I was photographing the pumpkins; I remember how charmed you were by them! ...this afternoon I'm trading some fresh bread for more tomatoes from Ellen!
Ooh, pickling beets - keep it simple is my motto. We tried all sorts, pickling spices etc but nothing beat vinegar & sugar. Keeps for over a year too but my kitchen looked like I'd murdered a small animal, red/pink everywhere! :-)
@blightygal HAHAHA!!! Beets are absolutely murderous-looking "once you rip their skin off!" Ok...that's sick! Sorry! I'll keep your suggestion in mind, and I would agree that beets don't need a lot done to them, they're so wonderful already!
How wonderful finding fresh beets and onions. I love roasted beets with onion and just before serving I add some feta cheese. Now I need to be on the lookout for some beets....
