*THE BEST*, most authentic Chicken Gumbo Soup I've had since I was a child!
I was the third generation on my mother's side, born in New Orleans, and my mother was an amazing cook. I was raised on thick, flavorful gumbo, but out on my own, I never found anything as good again. On this particular evening we stepped out for a bistro dinner, where we found all the staff and customers speaking French. (New Brunswick is the only bi-lingual Canadian province.) I thought to give the soup a go, and the first sip took me back to my childhood! Aha...here I was amidst the Acadians who cooked like my mother did! What a taste sensation!
That looks delicious. I'm not feeling brilliant so am having a fast to get my body geared up to fight any infection minus medicine. I think soup like that would help!
I should have said it was broth for me. Think with pearl barley, lentils and peas, tasty with leeks and parsley, rich with chicken and stock made from the bones. Add shredded cabbage , carrots and potatoes, heaven!
@ceilidh Oh Margaret, that sounds amazing! I ADORE pearl barley! I have an hour to wait before we meet friends for dinner in town... The banana I just ate isn't taking the place of all this delicious soup discussion!
It looks delicious and to have the taste bring you back to your childhood is just plain nirvana! Nice to have these moments of pure joy with food memories.
What a delight that must have been. I too miss some of my Mom's dishes, and the Grandkids often talk about some of the meals at Grandma's house, so my niece has planned an evening at her house where all the kids are going to make one of my Mom's dishes and she called the event, "Grandma Schies's Dinner Party" Now we will see if we can come up with similar tastes. Either way it is going to be fun.
