What an impossibility to photograph the enormity of this tree, its canopy covering an acre of the park in which it grows! There are 16 major trunks in additional to the original tree trunk (above the pink dot in the center of the park.) The additional trunks grow when the air roots touch the ground and begin to grow into a trunk. The tree's symmetrical shape was created over many years by the care given to it by the residents of Lahaina. At sunset you can hear thousands of birds chattering as they prepare to roost for the night!
For the first time, we visited inside the old court house seen in the picture. Until recent years it was Lahaina's working court house, but it is now a very nice museum, open to the public.
A natural playground for kids. Looks like great fun and how wonderful that the residents are invested in taking care of this beautiful piece of nature.
Definitely gigantic. I have not had much luck myself getting it in frame either. Maybe if you could get on top of the old hotel near by you could get a better angle. Oh well. Hey' be sure to stop at Cheesburger in Paradise, and also Aloha Mixed Plate while in town. I like both of those places.
@adambralston On a drive through I told Ken it looked like just the sort of place I'd like to stop...I go for "local" and "authentic"! We'll be eating there soon...and as you're the second person on 365 I've now seen mention it, perhaps I should add a photo! Re:the banyan, perhaps the Pioneer Inn would offer a canopy view, but it's all those "dinosaur roots" that make it so appealing! Thanks for the drop-by, and Aloha!
@Weezilou Aloha mixed plate is kind of a low key place. Seriously, the food is served on paper plates. Feels more like a backyard party to me. Cheeseburger in Paradise has pretty good food overall, and in the evenings there might be a live band upstairs. There is also a pizza place across the street, not far from there, I think it's upstairs too. That was some good pizza as well. And then there is a shaved ice cart further down the street towards the banyan tree.
And Louise, really close to the Banyan tree is a store that sells authentic and historic travel and movie posters. You really should go in there, because I think you would love it. If you are still in the area that is....
@fjmom Thanks Carol! Anything else you'd like to see that I might get for you? Note Adam's suggestions below your comment. He certainly was well-fed here! And Adam, @adambralston except for Aloha Plate, I may let our kids know of your suggestions. (We'll babysit while they have a much-deserved Date Night!) We're on the north end of Kaanapali until the 12th.
And Adam, you know me well...I certainly love travel posters! I'll look for the shop! I'd rather get one nice authentic item of some sort than a bag full of souvenirs! Thanks, too, for liking the top photo. When you "know" the place, you know how enormous it is! I added the other to try to capture another glimpse of the space it fills!
Carol, in the history, that square was set aside to be a "shady park" that people could enjoy. They certainly got their wish! People now come from around the world to enjoy it!
