Over a bit more than two minutes and 48 photos, Ken and I watched the life-and-death-struggle of the eel this heron caught! The tide was low and the bird was up to his knees in eel grass...
The ultimate outcome... Eel slithered off, his ears a bit mangled and Heron returned to seining for more petite morsels, which he came up with again and again and again...
I've never encountered a heron so agreeable to be photographed... He must have been very hungry!
@allie912 ...never had a pet eel, and I know my family --not me!-- will eat them as sushi! I do LOVE the beautiful ones I've seen when diving...wouldn't want them to be hurt... All in all, that heron was getting a lot to eat, so perhaps the eel was like an inedible piece of meat that gets pushed aside...
those herons are fearsome predators. Now there are some fish in our little pond out back, but one year a heron visited repeatedly. One day he fished them all out and pecked them to death before even starting to eat.
Wonderful capture of the actions of this blue heron. I was able to get shot in Victoria of a blue heron eating a small eel too. When they are on the hunt they sit so still that's the only time I've been able to get pictures.
