Not many birds about at the nature center yesterday, but the one we saw was cause for excitement. Heard him before we saw him. About 75 feet into the woods, so tough to get a good shot, but I like this because of the flying wood chips. :).

I think this may be the Mrs. Pileated woodpecker. I’m pretty sure the male has red on his cheeks. Never the less, great catch. These woodpeckers are very shy. Occasionally we have a male come to our suet feeder on the deck. We only see him by accident and have to be extremely quiet even though we are on the inside of the house. The slightest noise will scare him away.
Great capture. Think this one is a male, at least by my book. The males have the red strip that extends beyond the beak. The book actually calls it a mustache. :-) It sure looks like it's been busy on that tree, from the holes that It had put in it.
