I am glad so many of you enjoyed the panorama view of the mural yesterday. As I said I would take a few days to highlight a few of the sections of the mural this week.
The Beverly Coal Company started as a co-operative under municipal sponsorship in 1931 as a way to provide employment for unemployed local miners. Mining played a huge part in Edmonton's history dating back to the late 1800's.
What seemed like a good idea unfortunately did not last and the company was facing bankruptcy in 1933. It managed to stay in business for a few more years and in 1937 the process to shut down the mine began.
Fortunately this story does have a happy ending because a couple of local businessmen became involved in the whole thing and managed to turn things around and the mine continued to operate until 1951.Today the site of the mine is now enjoyed by many of the residence of this neighbourhood in the form of a lovely park
this is a mural? holy cow! looks so realistic. i remember when i first saw your album. it was also a mural and melody was in the photo and i thought she was part of the mural.
Good luck, Alex.
