Tales of the City.......Where did all the beavers go

So through out this month I have decided that I will post some shots as part of a series entitled Tales of the City.
Todays first tale has to do with the beginnings of Edmonton. Edmonton owes it beginnings to the fur trade industry. Particularly the beaver. Beavers once were in abundance around here. So much so that a couple of large fur trading companies established themselves here .
There was once a location that was busting with the critters that it was named Beaver Hills.
Today the beavers are long gone from the area and it is now a remote area south east of the city. So remote in fact that there are not even roads leading into the area. The only way to see it would be to fly over it and take a birds eye view of it.
The City of Edmonton however has not forgotten the connection to the beaver or the area where they once were found in abundance.
This park area in downtown Edmonton located right on Jasper Avenue is named Beaver Hills Park
I loved this little history lesson! This will be a wonderful series.

Very interesting. We have beavers in Virginia that sometimes need to be relocated because they build dams that send pond and lake water into people's yards. If you don't take them far away, they keep returning. Persistent fellows!

Nice shot. Sad about the beavers. I feel bad when humans take over and build in a place populated with wildlife. They are running out of places to go.

I remember reading a book a LONG time ago that was about the fur trading from your region. But that's about all I remember about it! However, I do remember on one of our early trips up to Vermont to visit my Dad that we passed an area which had beaver "houses" in a river that had made a pond and we saw one! Glad to see that the beavers are still remembered in Edmonton. Are there some living in that remote area or are they relocated?
November 3rd, 2014
that is too sad about them dying off there! glad there are some in remote areas.
