Its a lovely lemony yellow colour - not gorse which would be more golden!

@maggiemae - Yes was definitely not gorse - you've made me go looking it up as it had very distinctive holly-like leaves - I think it might be Oregon grape http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahonia_aquifolium
