The cemetery at Skippers

We drove out to Skippers. A pretty hairy drive at best, but stunning scenery. This photo is taken at the cemetery. Skippers was once a thriving community during gold rush days. The dead trees in the background are wilding pines that have been sprayed.
My, what a beautiful old cemetery. Have the trees been sprayed to kill them off and make room for other vegetation, or have I misunderstood the purpose of the spraying?

A reminder of times gone by.

@jamibann The trees have been sprayed on purpose to kill them and stop them from spreading. They are wild seedlings from farmed exotic pine and are spreading terribly in Central Otago. Ruining the beautiful countryside.

Austere looking, with all the skeleton trees and little green vegetation.
