The Great Blue Heron is most frequently observed standing motionless in shallow water waiting for small fish and amphibians to move into striking range according to the Royal Ontario Museum field guide.
That would explain why this youngster did not fly away when I stood on the shore watching him.
Adult Great Blue Herons have long plume feathers hanging from neck and back and have a darker blue gray colour.
