Lucy and I were fortunate to find Bedern Hall open and serving light lunches this week. We had a look at the Guild Hall first. I liked this lovely wooden screen celebrating various guild masters and freemen.
Bedern Hall was closely tied to York Minster. It was originally part of the College of the Vicars Choral which occupied the area between Goodramgate, St Andrewgate and Aldwark. The hall was the refectory (or dining hall) for the college from the 1390's until the middle of the 17th century when it passed into private hands. The hall, chapel and gatehouse are all that remain of the college.
The name Bedern is thought to be related to an Anglo Saxon word meaning 'house of prayer'. A similar name was given to other Yorkshire colleges in Ripon and Beverley.
Thank you to all of you who sent such lovely messages after mum died, they were very much appreciated. I was fortunate to be able to spend some quality time with mum at St.Luke's Hospice during her last days, and also time with my dad both before and after her death.
A beautiful shot of this nice wooden interior with his great history.
Glad you be back and so sorry for you/the lost of you Mother. Send you, and you family, my deepest sympathy and condolence . Hope you will find a way to get on with you life.
@ceilidh Thank you. Glad you liked the history as well as the photo. I have been wanting to get inside this building for a long time. Usually just see the outside. Now for the chapel.....Katharine
