This interesting church is hidden away behind the tudor buildings shown in my post of last Tuesday (the 17th), and it is a church with a long, complicated and very interesting history.
The church was founded before the Norman invasion of 1066 and was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as one of five great northern churches.
In 1089 this church was re-founded by its new Norman lord as a Benedictine priory, served by a community of monks. Over the centuries there have been many changes to the structure, including some in the early 20th century. The tower in this shot was built in 1453.
Within the church, in the area below the tower, there is an excellent exhibition with details of the history of the church and some archaeological exhibits from in and around the site.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are all very much appreciated!
I hope you have enjoyed this brief evening tour of York over the last few days.
