Two parts of St Johns University were open for visitors as part of York Unlocked, and what a contrast they were. Today we see the interior of the University Chapel, an example of 1960s brutalist architecture.
The architect was George Pace, and the building was completed in 1966. It became a grade II listed building in 2004.
It's a light and airy building, and has very good acoustics - as I remember well from a rock concert held in there in the early 1970s!
It could be unique in architecture but it is not the architecture I like - it is too bare. Still a lovely capture of it. George Pace could be easily be of Maltese origin. Both name and surname are common in Malta.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I must admit I'm not a fan of brutalist architecture, it tends to produce stark and bleak buildings, though I think this is a reasonably positive example of it's type. I find it hard to be objective about this building (and the rest of the campus) since it had such a significant impact on my life.
