The cows queuing up for milking at Sizergh Barn near Kendal.
I love this place as you can have a walk over fields, do a wee bit of shopping, clothes, home ware, toys & jewellery etc besides there being a fantastic farm shop. There is also a very nice cafe upstairs where you can watch the cows being milked as you eat.
When I was there you could smell a very strong whiff of silage which permeanated everywhere. It made me feel right at home & took me back to our milking days. It might put some people off but not us!!
Although these aren't Jersey or Geurnsey cows which is where gold top milk comes from the ceiling & walls reminded me of the lovely rich milk our Jersey cows used to produce. Butterfat can be over 5% , lovey rich creamy milk from a delightful breed of cows.
Three good things:
1. A gorgeous bouquet of flowers for Mothers Day from Brian & Lesley in NZ. See extras album.
2. The biscuit tin filled this afternoon....none burnt!
3. I am all ready to start decorating our bedroom tomorrow!
Chosen a colour? I managed an hour of undercoating woodwork. The pink has grown on me and we all like it now. Sammy would love the milk. Aside from water the only thing he will drink is blue milk. Stopped buying once benji was 2 but Sammy didn't like green and since he doesn't like anything else blue milk is now bought especially for him. Creamier the better he thinks!
@newbank well he has taste your son....blue top is the best for growing children. So good he likes milk too, we always had our milk straight from the bulk tank in the dairy but when we changed from Holstein cows to Jersey cows we found the milk too fatty so now we buy green top. I didn't like any f my green patches so now have completely changed colour to a shade called Purbeck Stone.....I bought a big tin so hope I like it!! I am going to do one wall at once, two coats then put the furniture back & start another...the easiest way when we are still living in the room!
Next after bathroom is Sammy room. He will move into our room, we will camp out in the living room and he will banned from seeing it till its all done. Aim is to be birthday surprise.
My Grandmother's family ran a dairy and hog farm in rural Illinois and I for one, love the smell of silage. This is lovely. The family cows were Brown Swiss for awhile and Jersey cows
Marvelous shot of the girls, Pat. I love creamy dairy products...cream for my coffee, rich butter, ice cream, yogurt...I think I would have liked being a dairy farmer. Good luck with your decorating project tomorrow!
I think i've seen a TV program about that place! I'm a great believer in full cream milk - a complete food. We had glasses of that growing up and were healthy. Though John's older sister had to give up putting cream on everything as she had clogged arteries.
@judithg Well,it's just three floors Judith with just a small selection of everything......you might remember going downstairs to the calf ship pons with uneven flooring ......rag rugs & pottery etc.
sorry about the mass reply tonight folks .....I have been on the phone & got behind .....glad you all like the cows.......it was lovely to see & smell, their homely warmth again.
Oh this is so much a reminder of Latus Hall Farm!!
So nice to have the sensory reminders of good times! Nice to have international contact at this time of year!! Enjoy.
