On my walk yesterday I saw Dick who is in his eighties walking across his fields with this scoop over his shoulder. I stopped as I was curious to see what he was going to use it for.
Anyway he started scooping out sludge & debris from the ditch.
Obviously a very worthwhile job as we can see from all the flooding problems we have during wet weather.
Dick knows that if you don't clear ditches & dredge rivers we have flooding problems.
He lives with his wife in the farmhouse & his daughter has converted the old barn into a house. She & her husband can keep a close eye on dad & mum & Dick can potter in his fields all day if he wants to.
A long & happy life for them I guess.
Three good things:
1. Bonfire smoke smell....lovely!
2. A lady jockey won the Melbourne cup......there is nothing us women can't do these days!
3. Our local village beauty salon is extending her business into the empty gents clothes shop. Well done Rebecca & well done the local ladies who all like to look good!
Yes I think you are right there.. I am married to one of those farmers, and I can see him in 20 years still out there cleaning drains, and grubbing thistles, and ragwort.. hopefully we get a holiday or two in between..
@julzmaioro Well what could be a better life Julz? George will help out on the farm being useful as long as he can that's why it's such a healthy life style...no bored men around cluttering up the kitchen. I know we haven't a farm now ax such but Harry keeps busy mowing, hedge cutting etc that's when he's not bowling! A recipe for a long life!
He must still have a strong back to be handling those implements. That sort of work does my back in! Sounds a good set up over there in the farmhouse which is still in the country.
