Fracking is a big subject round here. We had a test site only a mile as the crow flies from our house but they seem to have shut that one down.
There is a very large site on Blackpool road which is under 24 hour security as the anti fracking group is in constant attendance. Now there is another site at Rosacre where Quadrilla is trying to get another well drilled.
This is a gate down our lane with one of the protest signs that are all over the place.
I am sitting on the fence as I am undecided. If I lived near by I might be a NIMBY but on the other hand we need to get our energy from somewhere. Dangerous relying on other perhaps hostile countries.
Three good things:
1. Flightradar24
2. I found my lovely warm scarf.
3. Number 1 sons birthday. We What's Ap videoed him this morning.
I suspect you’re stuck with it because it isn’t happening in London’s backyard! I noticed on Question Time how big an issue it is still. I went to a play about it and have to say I veered into the anti because of the amount of water that’s used and polluted- but then as you say we are reliant on countries we would be better not relying on.
It's difficult. As you say we need energy from somewhere but I worry about the damage they will do. I use Flightradar24 when my son is hopping round the world. It's very good.
@thistle There's an update Joyce in Flightradar but I can't manage it at all. You can stay the same on the lowest level or upgrade to silver for £1.95 a month or Gold for £33 a year! I am on a three month free trial but can't understand how it works. The option of watching the landing appears to have gone or a can't work it. No way am I paying any money so will go back to basics. I love watching my family as they travel round here & there.
@judithg it's a massive issue here Judith quite evenly divided probably. Massive demos along Blackpool road. Lots of locals demonstrating but of course lots of lifestyle protestors too that demonstrate wherever there is a controversial plan. All about six miles from us at the moment. I can understand the worry as it was supposed to have caused a minor earthquake but it would be fantastic to have our own gas plentiful gas supply.
@lyndamcg I think most of us are undecided Lynda, if I lived nearby I would be worried, it's the route of the wagons taking water away that's up before the courts next.
A suburb of Dallas has experienced minor earthquakes tied to fracking. It uses so much of our water too, 9.6 million gallons of water per well! I am not a fan! We discovered a huge new oil field a year and a half ago in West Texas which should stop the fracking once the wells start flowing. Without that oil field discovery we would have to frack though, we don’t consume as much oil/gasoline as we used to, but we still need more than ever. It’s a catch 22 situation for us and for the UK, for sure!
@louannwarren interesting hearing about your experiences Lou Ann. I know we've heard in the past all the drawbacks, for instance water catching fire, etc don't think that would happen here as whereas you have a lot of bore holes our water is piped. You do worry though but I have no idea how we are going to,provide so much energy for all us people in the future.
Such a difficult choice and one that I do not understand the ins and outs well enough to make a choice so I am sitting on the fence , swaying from one side to the other and hoping the powers that be make the right choice ! Lovely to see a bit of a blue sky Pat !
@beryl Yes we have had rather nice weather the last few days although this photo wasn't taken today. Cold & windy tidal though. I agree with sitting on the fence, nothing I can do about it anyway & the councils take no notice whatsoever of any protests or even what the local people want. Same with planning & houses they do what they want to do! You will know that!
That flight radar site is so interesting! The energy debate is all round the world. Saving energy is becoming an interest but should be encouraged a hell of a lot more.
Same problems with fracking here in Australia too. Difficult decision. The retirement of coal powered power stations in South Australia caused major blackouts last year because the 'alternatives' weren't enough to supply all the customers. We desperately need alternative sources of power. The greener alternatives like wind farms are disliked by some people too. Some people reckon they scares the cows, ha ha. You can't please everyone whatever you do, but we need power. How would we do 365 without power :)
@onewing interesting to hear it's a common problem Babs. Exactly the same arguments here, wind & solar power are all very well in theory but can they provide enough. How they are going to provide enough electricity for all these electric cars in the future too beats me!
It totally baffles me how we are going to sustain the amount of energy we are reliant upon when every new idea has so many problems and complaints. We do still, of course, have plenty of coal still unmined but coal has fallen out of favour as a source of power. We are full of needs but nothing seems to suit us. In the end, compromise will have to occur or we will have to do without. Aye me, what a tangled web we weave!
Loved that your daughter used to work at Chartwell - always been my favourite house in the country. I may have even met her!
@casablanca Yes you may have, my niece she worked there a few years ago, in charge of functions & stuff, name of Phoebe V if that's any help. Slim & longish dark hair. She went on to work fo Olympic committee & other places. You are spot on with your comments!
