I haven’t been into Preston for months so I was really surprised to see how very quiet Fishergate was. It’s the main shopping street in the city & it was dead as a doornail!
Internet shopping is doing its worst! Hopefully because it was a little early in the day perhaps but when I remember back when I was young sometimes specially on a Saturday you could hardly move for shoppers!
Three good things:
1. More stuff to the charity shop!
2. The tennis season has started!
3. Delicious praline soft toffees from New Orleans.
@beryl Ideal for your buggy Beryl....this is a pedestrian way so ideal for families. A bit of a strange thing that the streets are cleared of vehicles for shoppers & there aren’t that many! Must be busier at weekend perhaps!
I don't altogether trust internet shopping - it might be faulty, not the right size, won't do what you wanted....so like to browse in the real shops. These pavements are so clean.
You are eating these praline toffees? Hope they don't pull your teeth out!
It is sad what the internet shopping is doing to real stores. But when I go in a store and it does not carry what I want, it makes me have to shop the internet. I make Pralines from a recipe out of my old Better Homes and Garden Cook Book (from around 1970). It is a wonderful recipe.
It seems the days of going out for some retail therapy have disappeared along with all the big stores. So sad! I always enjoyed a day out shopping with a friend making lots of stops for coffee and lunch. We all do the internet shopping now as the shops don’t hold the stock but it’s very sad. The high street definitely disappearing!
@pandorasecho I would definitely shop mostly online if all I had was a Walmart or equivalent Dixie! I like to shop local now, not much travel, smaller streets & individual shops plus you see people to chat to!
@jgpittenger I’m hoping it gets busier than this later in the day but a couple if hours later there wasn’t a massive difference. It’s so easy to shop online these days but definitely nicer to browse in person. @loweygrace Preston did look lovely in the sun & the trees they planted a few years ago looking lovely...a big improvement!
Nice diary shot of the high street. You're right that internet is killing high streets everywhere, and I'm as guilty as anyone of using the internet to purchase items needed quickly as otherwise I have a one-hour drive to town, parking to pay for, and no certainty of getting what I want there, when I do get there! Whereas Amazon, well, it's so easy and quick. It's a poisoned chalice though - as are many things in today's world.
Such an inviting street to shop in. Really too bad that there are not more people in it.
Like you, I try to shop local if I can. Only go online if local does not have what I need.
@jamibann Middle of the night is my danger zone....on my iPad & see stuff! I bought a Kate Spade cross over bag the other night! Wasn’t a hasty decision as Alex bought the same in USA & it was the perfect bag I have been looking for, big enough for all my things especially the bulky glasses case....this one is perfect so I sent for it from USA, half price!
