My son in NZ sent me this photo so I’m cheating really but thought it was a good photo to use when I haven’t anything better today.
They are doing a pregnancy test on all these lovely ladies...in calf or not as the case may be!
My son milks the cows in this 40 aside herringbone milking shed & they scanning each cow using Ultrascan which is an easy & accurate method of getting the result.
The vet is using a probe inside the cow which shows up if there is a calf there...
Three good things:
1. Walked to the post office to,post birthday cards to NZ & had a nice chat on the way.
2. We bought a Chinese meal for two in Sainsbury’s yesterday, no idea what it will be like but shall test it out tonight, it’s all in the oven timings I’ve been told!
3. Harry has loaded the trailer up with stuff out of the garage to take to storage at his sisters...on the move again shortly.
A great shot Pat and an insight on today's farming with all its modern gadgets ! On the move again Pat !! but at least you can look foreward to tour new refurbished home !
Great photo....the things we don't think about in the production of our dairy/farming products!
Good to have family with storage space close by!
We are storage people for the B Team!!!! Garage full! Attic more and even some in garden shed. 😂😂😂😂
Thought it looked like a kiwi shed.. A job we will be doing soon.. @gamelee she would be the recorder Lee .. has a computer and loggs if she is'empty' or estimated date to calve.. Not just guess work anymore..
Bet you are lookibg forward to the reno getting underway Pat..
@sarah19 I can just imaging Sallie. Thing is they never look at them again in my experience, they think they want this stuff but never pick it up! This time our lot had to decide if their stuff was to go or not...
@julzmaioro thanks Julz...yes a scene you will know well. We only got as far as the arm up...no fancy equipment in our day, not that long ago either! We are ready for next stage....Spring coming so an excellent time to start. Biggest delay will be getting hold of supplies they say...covid has made a mess of production...windows are hard to come by apparently.
Just looking at this photo again we just noticed what looks like feeders at the front of the stalls. I know normally NZ farmers don’t feed a cow cake but some do these days. Must ask Brian, just wondering what you think? Of course UK cows are pretty much always fed a cake while being milked but unusual in NZ.
@gijsje yes we thought so when he sent it! @lyndamcg Oh there is lots more to it than you would ever know Lynda! @gamelee thanks for your interest Lee.
Nice to see this image and that you get to share in what's happening on the NZ farm. Also good the @julzmaioro was able to help fill in the details. Hopefully there won't be too many holdups for your renovations.
Love this peek at farm life. Bless the farmers who keep the world fed.
How long will you be out of your home for all of the renovations, Pat? And where will you be staying for the duration?
@peggysirk we’ve rented a holiday cottage in the village Peggy about five minutes walk away. We’ve booked it for four months! Hopefully it will be long enough even if at the end we have to just move back in & eat out every night!! 🤣🤣
@onewing Well it’s not everyone’s cup of tea but it wouldn’t do if we were all the same Babs, long hours but it’s good working outdoors & with nature. I wasn’t from a farming family at all but I loved it.
@sangwann it’s a bit dodgy here too Dione....unfortunately the small family farm is getting bigger & bigger...very sad. They all seem to be meeting themselves coming back....getting bigger to compete but & make some money but in the process losing their identity...
We're 15 minutes walk from a dairy farm, Mitzi and l pass regularly and see the 'gubbins’ inside. Only recently have they been inside after such prolonged good weather.
