St Lawrence’s Church, Warkworth.
There is a lot to talk about with this church but the rather amazing thing is that they’ve moved lots of the old grave headstones & lined them all up along the perimeter wall.
The grounds had a new drainage system, some trees cut down & at the same time they decided to make more green space in the church yard. I am thinking the church may use the space for functions during the year.
Three good things:
1. We haven’t done much today....rain on & off most of the day.
2. We did go a quick walk with family & Connie to check out the build..they hadn’t see it for a while so lots to see.
3. Toad in the hole for evening meal.
Beautiful image. I love the stones lined up and also the colour of the stones in the building across the street. And is that a copper beech tree.......makes me homesick for No 3 where I grew up. Must go up soon!!
The headstones have been removed permanently. They are old graves probably unsafe so safer to remove them I imagine. Every grave in that graveyard was old....no recent graves with flowers on at all. I will write more on the church tomorrow!
Thank you all.
Pat , I think they will need to exhume the graves if they move the headstones. Quite an exercise . I like the lighting in this shot especially the greens
So much age and character in those old headstones. I can understand the danger they might pose by tumbling over. Seems like they could be replaced with small, flat, ground level markers. That way the area could still be used as open green space.
@phil_howcroft I have no idea if there are still bodies there....these are very ancient graves so I’ve no idea what they did with the remain. A lot of grave stones all round the edge...these are just a few.
I like the beautiful old wall.
