Another sort of shape...this is the wind turbine belonging to Dewlay Cheese.
There was rather a big fuss when this went up as it is adjacent to the main A6 road & very visible for miles.
Car drivers where craning their necks to look at it & bumping the car in front.
We seem to have got used to it now but recently a second larger one was turned down after complaints from the Aviation Department.
Bizarre, its not as though planes are going to fly that low?!! I love this photo what a contrast to our light summery shots!! Gorgeous dark brooding sky..apparently snow is now on its way, go go as quickly as you can!!!
Oh blimey you'll get @fueast going again. Looks amazing against that sky. Had an interesting talk to a man at the hockey about wind turbines (as you do). We could see a few from the pitch but they were turning very slowly in the strong wind. He says they turn away from the wind so that they don't go too fast and if the system breaks down they blow up!
@judithg Well you do keep dragging me into other peoples conversations! I think down-wind turbines flex away from the mast in high winds which means they don't smash it! Thought they had gone out of fashion actually because they tend to be noisier. These lovely small ones are elegant though no? Would love to get some effiency data from some. Have spotted a few around Leeds.
@judithg@fueast Been talking to NZ so late commenting here but very interesting facts re wind turbines. It has always confused me as sometimes it's going like the clappers in a light wind & at other times hardly moving so that explains a lot. This one looks small but this is taken from 5 miles away so actually very tall.
Another beautiful mix of brooding sky and sunlight, Pat. Gorgeous! As far as the wind turbines are concerned, they are more aesthetically pleasing than a big, unattractive coal fired power plant. But so many are required to make an appreciable amount of power. I've seen wind turbine 'farms' that are a bit overbearing on the landscape.
Pat, i really like wind turbines.....they have a certain majestic beauty about them ...there are some on the pennines as you drop down into Bolton and I really like them......although i think i'm in the minority ....i love this one contrasted against the sky
