@gigiflower Thanks Sam! @busylady Thanks Judith. Although it may look uncannily like one, this is not an iris. You can't see the rest of the plant in this photo, but it is actually a blossom on a tree. I have no idea what it is, but I would love someone to tell me!
I love this purple blossom. I am also surprised at what I can find in my own neighborhood. It's kind of a challenge to see something different on my walks.
Such a gorgeous blossom... I've seen several of these trees on the campus where we're visiting. I'll do some asking and report back if I can find out... With all these faculty members, I'll try to ferret out the one who teaches biology!
...I looked at the photos I took...the blossoms (on the tree) are very similar...purple and iris like, but not identical...less noticeable pistils & stamens. Still, I'm going to ask around...
@jamibann@dgrynn@lyndemc@busylady I put a high school biology teacher on the trail to provide an answer. When I last saw him he said he was familiar with all the indigenous plants, but not this. Tonight he sent an email with the following, >>My little brother (my ornamental expert) says that its a Bauhinia purpurea or "purple orchid." Looks right to me.
Hope that helps,
Joshua
@Weezilou Sounds right Louise, my research lead me to believe it's a Hong Kong Orchid Tree - probably one and the same thing. Thank you for going to so much effort! :-)
