Käthe Kollwitz's Mother with Her Dead Son by jyokota

Käthe Kollwitz's Mother with Her Dead Son

Berlin's Neue Wache Memorial is a place to remember those who died in war. What I find profoundly moving about this statue is the personalization of war casualties, and the highly emotional expression in the loss of a mother's son.

I photographed this and posted it years ago when I lived in Berlin, and I was surprised to see how "washed out" my posted photo appeared. This time, I processed the image to dramatically emphasize the light in the building; to evoke feelings of focused pain within a larger world. The circular light on the upper right is a reflection of the whole in the ceiling. It allows rain, snow, and elements of weather to fall naturally. I've seen this statue covered in leaves, with bouquets and candles, but this single rose seemed particularly poignant.

The light, the space, convey the sorrow, pain, loss and loneliness...

I'm almost glad I can't see her expression! Too sad! But a great and thought prevoking memorial!

I think your picture captures the feeling that the original artist intended. Very well done.

The new edits really are spectacular. The darkness of the moment, the curve of the light which for me evokes the personal tragedy surrounded by the vast emptiness that she now faces. Fav.

How interesting to look back and see your previous post in 2013. This version is much more dramatic, as you say. Both are beautiful though, Junko, as are your words.

I like the way you included the light from the hole in the ceiling and the thoughtful way you processed the image.

I like the dramatic take on this. The only thing I miss from the earlier shot it's the ability to see more details. Here, you have to KNOW what the menorial is about, there you saw the details of the statue better for it to tell its own story.

It is poignant, emphasised by your edit...fav
