Another throwback -- Every year for 20+ years I give away themed books for Halloween. Parents remember to come by and even remark if I missed the previous year (because I was traveling), children tell me it's their favorite treat (well, two did), and I've even had a teenager I took to Japan say, "aren't you the one who gives books for Halloween??" This year, I sat on the top steps and kept replenishing the choices on the front steps. I chatted with families as they came by, and in between I photographed -- squirrels trick-or-treating my neighbors house across the street. They had lined their sidewalk with Kit Kat bars for trick-or-treaters to pick up and the squirrels happily obliged. But where to hide those treats for winter? They scurried back and forth across the street in search of an appropriate place to dig a hole to place their treat. And they kept me entertained.
We had premade bags set up around the grave tombstones I had in the yard--a squirrel could have tried to take it, but it might have been too heavy. haha. What a lovely thing to give the books each year. I was actually in quarantine on Oct 31st as I was going into surgery, but that's why I set up the self-serv tombstone situation! What memories we will have of these times.
wow...love this, what a great tradition! We are a block away from the Mars Factory on Oak Park Avenue, so normally we are inundated with trick or treaters, this was the first year we decided not to take part. just did not feel safe!
