A Look around the Village - No.14

When we were young or had our own children, we asked them to draw a house. Well this is the typical house they or we drew. A square box with the door in the middle and 4 windows.

This is one of the cottages on the village green and you will note that there is a space for a window upstairs above the front door. This is a clue that this house was built before 1851 when the English, Scotish and French Government all brought in a window tax where you had to pay them based on the number of windows you had.

This forced many to start bricking up windows to reduce their taxes and this is a good example of what they looked like. I personally would want to repaint this house and particularly the lovely fencing and bright white. Looks like a nice kitchen extension built on the side.
You're absolutely right - it could do with a lick of paint but it is just like the pictures we used to draw. Fav

Such a lovely capture of this cottage. The lawn is a beautiful green and I love the blue door. If it was mine, I'd be tempted to put that window back. Fav.

So typical of a drawing! Crazy taxing windows - what were they thinking! Terrific capture :)

Great shot. I thought they bricked it up cause no one was drawing 5 windows. That's an interesting story. I guess governments have always been stupid.

What a silly horrendous effect taxes can have. Ridiculous. Great capture showing the effects.

Just how I would draw a house aged 34. With smoke coming out of a chimney.
