Yesterday I visited Painswick to pick up another geocache, my first for 2015, so whilst in the town known as the Queen of the Cotswold, I visited the impressive St. Mary's churchyard.
It is well known for the beautifully manicured yew trees and the very old tombstones. If you count all the yew trees in the churchyard there are 99 and it's said that the devil would destroy the hundredth if it was ever planted.
This is one of the paths in the churchyard where the yew trees make arches for you to walk through. I found some trees with Christmas labels on giving best wishes to relatives past. More beautiful pictures to follow and view this with the black background.
Wonderful on black. I love old tombstones - don't get to see many in Canada, we are such a young country. The avenue of trees is stunning. Such a lovely puzzle-box photo. FAV
You are so right it just pops out and comes alive on the black background. What an interesting image and story. The placing of special messages to departed family and friends, what a nice idea. Speaks of other cultures like many of the Pacific islanders who have the family tomb in the front yard of their home and speak to the departed everyday.
