St. Marys, Ontario is nicknamed “Stone Town” due to the abundance of limestone in the surrounding area. There are many grand, stone buildings in the town’s historic core. The town hall was built in 1892 in a Richardson Romanesque design. The structure, of St. Marys limestone and red sandstone, cost approximately $15,000.
Oh beautiful! I love late 19th / early 20 vernacular architecture. Just looked up Richardson Romanesque, never heard of it. Absolutely gorgeous buildings, some seeming to meld that robust romanesqueness with turn of the last century arts and crafts stylings. Wonderful.
