Texas Tech University has one of the largest public art collections in the country; this statue of Zeus (minus his lightning bolt) is on the front lawn of the school’s library. I have to say I really thought he looked out of place!
I took the time to read up on Zeus, the original sculpture was found at the bottom of the Aegean Sea in the 1920’s. It is in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens in Greece. It is also referred to as the God from the Sea, or Poseidon, but since his arm is positioned as Zeus’ arm, to throw a lightning bolt, everyone believes he is Zeus. A West Texas couple that collects original molds of Michelango’s art gifted this bronze replica to Tech in honor of two Tech grads they are close to.
Well, he does seem a little out of place. Judging from some of the over- reacting that going on with statue these days, I wonder how long it will be before someone finds something wrong with this piece of art. Good shot.
