This is posted for "Leslie" @lesip! I saw some Penny Farthings which were called "High Bikes" on his site! I didn't know where this photo was in the whole wide world so thought I would post this to say Oamaru is the hub of these bikes especially in NZ. The guy with the black hat on on the left, rode the length of NZ from top to bottom on his Penny Farthing! He was a friend and neighbour of ours and is so good at publicising these bikes!
This scene is set in Oamaru's historic Victorian area.
@frida Thankyou Frida! This place is out of this world in NZ - the Oamaru stone buildings have withstood the test of time! Nothing like English and European history though!
Wonderful capture--I remember the first time you talked about these "Penny Farthings". I think they are so cool looking. And I just love the look of this shot, maggiemae.
Wow !! Apparently the one Sat. In Frederick was the first held in the United States and there are only 4 such Penny Farthing races in the world. Sadly there was a collision between two on the last lap and a female rider was air lifted to shock trauma. We didn't stay for the whole race and I found out in the paper Sunday. She has been upgraded to stable from critical condition so hoping she fully recovers. Thanks for sharing your picture with me.
