This one of the first photos I took here beside the mighty Waitaki River! Ruby, my trusty electric bike allowed me to do speeds of up to 23km on this trail - all peddle assisted of course. I had to watch when the shingle on the trail was too soft and thick or my rear wheel would skid and I would almost fall off! Going through a river posed a new problem and one shoe got wet but found if I accelerated I could go forward in the water!
@grammyn I was all alone on this trail, Katy and wondered what I would do if a monster jumped out of a bush at me! Then I decided I would just use the throttle and I would zoom out of sight in an instant!
@taffy Yes, Taffy - you peddle and that starts the electric motor which you can choose how fast you want to go! People look so surprised when I stream past them at a fair pace!
@redy4et@taffy Whats special about this bike is that it folds up and can be put into the car boot! It weighs about 25kg and there are strong levers everywhere that you can work to fold it up!
This is your trusty stead! I can't see the engine & it looks just like an ordinary bike, I expected it to be bulkier than that. Would love to have seen you mid river....how brave you are! Just read that it's folding too.....a gem!
i imagine the perfect blue sky that is reflected on the water. wish i could ride a bike or i'd have bought one like ruby. then i'd probably do a leana niemand, cycling all over the world.
@kwiksilver But she didn't Gillian - she dug her back wheel into the gravel underwater and refused to go any further! I had to have severe words with her!
@maggiemae Oh that's you?!? I heard that his daughter-in-law was on 365, but was not aware it was you!!!! Hell yes, I've heard of him - and that was before the movie! One of the finest films ever, by the way - I just love that story. I have thee Harleys, but never was able to obtain an Indian. The new ones I don't really consider to be true Indians, but I ride with a few friends that have genuine old models, including a Scout and a real Chief. And I had a friend that was at Bonneville when Burt was there - different class, but the place was abuzz about Burt and what he was doing. Wow, what a small world!!
Beautiful view and capture. Ruby looks like a mighty fine bike. Didn't know you could ride an electric bike through water though. Couldn't that cause a short?
I want that bike!! It sounds wonderful!! You are so brave in your adventures!! I was wondering why I haven't seen your pictures lately and just realised I have unfollowed you somehow!! How does this happen? Anyway Fav for your great bike and lovely view and FOLLOWING of course!!
I saw this elderly chap on his electric bike go past another cyclist at quite a pace, I was quite amusing to see because he was peddling but was obviously putting no effort in. and wouldn't you know it, no camera.
Yeah go for it Maggie... you soon learnt the technique... ride like the clappers towards it then make sure the pedals are horizontal to give your feet the best chance of keeping dry
@yrhenwr I should have done that, David! What I did was set the speed fast then climbed on and peddled! Of course the wheels dug into the gravel and I came to a wet end!
