This is the front of the old hotel in Horeke that was licensed in 1832. I didn't think there was anyone around bar the Maori's then but the stories about the area are to be read in a book in the Bar. There was even a hint of cannabalism!
Built of heart kauri it appears to be NZ's oldest tavern. Now a hotel, it accommodates quite a few, mostly bikers as there is a good biking trail around here!
That is old ... Waiuku boast to have the oldest continuous licensed hotel it was build in 1851 so a little younger.. Had to google to see where you are ...
Ah yes, some of us stayed there when we did the twin coast trail in February. Had a great meal there. The other half of the group stayed in the beautiful old villa across the road
I have a place at Opua - the other end of the Twin Coast trail. Haven't done the bike ride yet - it is on the wish list! Interesting about the license given in 1832. I thought the Duke of Marlborough in Russell had the first license but that was in 1840! Fascinating.
