@kvphoto Wow! Thank you very much for your imagination with this. It's mating season for the eastern spade-foot toad (which is really a frog - not a toad). I was focusing on two of them. Most of the black is freshly laid eggs. There are hundreds of them in my neighbor's seasonal pond! You can hear their chorus for hours. It's a great big froggy orgy in there! Soon to go below freezing Friday night, they will go back underground until the next deluge we get.
